The construction of a machine shed involves meticulous planning, precise execution, and adherence to safety standards to provide a secure shelter for various agricultural or industrial equipment. Key considerations include site selection, foundation preparation, and choice of materials to ensure durability and functionality. Site selection involves evaluating factors such as accessibility, drainage, and proximity to other structures. Foundation preparation typically entails excavation, leveling, and possibly adding gravel or concrete pads for stability. The choice of materials, such as steel, wood, or concrete, depends on factors like budget, climate, and intended use. Proper ventilation, lighting, and security features are also essential aspects to enhance usability and protect the stored machinery. Additionally, incorporating eco-friendly practices, like rainwater harvesting or solar power, can enhance sustainability and efficiency. Regular maintenance and periodic inspections are crucial to ensure the longevity and safety of the machine shed, providing a reliable asset for storage and maintenance of equipment in agricultural or industrial settings.

Machine shed provide a comfortable and conducive environment to machineries and equipment. Machine shed provides shelter and conducive environment for the preservation of machines and ensure safety and good working condition of machineries and equipment. This paper discussed the construction of machine shed. Machine shed plays important role in agricultural sector and its importance cannot be neglected. It is an area of specialization that is relevant in agricultural engineering field; hence, implementation of such a project should be given priority.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                                        INTRODUCTION

1.1                                               BACKGROUND OF STUDY

The cost of buying farm machineries is high even when it is fairly used machine. The cost, when new, would be at least double this amount, and since many small farms have very inexpensive equipment, it is evident that a large number of farms have $3,000 or more invested in implements and machinery.

The more complicated a mechanism, the more important it is to be protected. A harrow or a plow may not depreciate very rapidly when left exposed to the weather, hut a grain binder or a combine harvester will not last long nor give satisfactory service after being exposed to the weather, used as a rubbing post for stock, or as a roost for poultry.

Many a farm machine is used for only a few clays each year and should remain in good condition for many years if it is properly oiled, repaired, and sheltered. The first two items require less attention if shelter is furnished. Surveys show that farm machines are sendoff actually worn out. A binder used six days each year for 16 years is not giving a very great amount of service; yet many binders last only seven or eight years. Although housing may be second in importance to systematic repairs in lengthening the life of farm machinery, it usually has a very important part in getting the repairing clone at the proper time and with the least inconvenience. Properly housed binders have about half the annual repair cost of hinders standing unsheltered.

Exposure to the weather destroys paint and causes wood to warp and the iron to rust. More power is required to operate a warped and rusted machine, and as a result less work is accomplished and it is of poorer quality. Good management in the housing of machinery will add to the net income, as “a penny saved is a penny earned.” It is also an advantage to have the farmstead appearance improved by putting the machines under shelter instead of leaving them standing in an unsightly patch of weeds. The operator will do better work with a machine that looks well and one that he can take pride in operating.

The care of a farm machine will be neglected unless there is a suitable building where the oil, wrenches, etc., may be kept and easily replaced after the servicing of the machine is completed. If the hand tools of the farm can be kept in a part of the machine shed nearest the house, they will generally be most convenient for all kinds of repair jobs. The main aim of this work is to construct a machine shed.

1.2                                                  PROBLEM STATEMENT

In our agricultural sector it was discovered that it is only fewer percent of farmers are using machines due to the cost of machines. When machine power is involved agriculture become more convenient and the production or yield capacity will increased than before. One of the major reasons why these machines fail or stolen is when they are not kept properly, when they are not shed it can cause many damages to the machine. Quite obviously, one should protect the machines from the harsh elements of weather and dust as well. This is the reason why machinery sheds are being constructed to solve these problems.

1.3                                     AIM AND OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The main aim of this project is to build a structure for keeping and parking of farm machineries which will in return preserve machine from harsh sun and rain. The objectives are:

  1. To preserve machinery and make sure they are in good operating condition.
  2. To protect machines from lost and vandalisation.
  • To protect machines from rust

1.4                                              PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT

The main purpose of machine shed is to provide shelter and conducive environment for the preservation of machines and ensure safety and good working condition of machineries and equipment.

1.5                                         BENEFITS OF MACHINERY SHED

  • The most obvious purpose and benefit of having machinery shed is related to the storage of your farming machines, such as ploughing engine, reaper, steam engine, winnowing machine, draw harrow, and much more. These machines need to be protected from harsh weather conditions, failing to do so may lead to malfunctioning of the same. So, if you want to make your farming machines more durable then keep them under the machinery shed.
  • These sheds can be used for storing crops as well. You can also store grains, hay, and different types of perishable foods. Keeping these items in the shed can add to their longevity. As a result, you will be able to save a lot of money in the long run.
  • Apart from crops, you can use the sheds as a temporary shelter for your animals. If you visit the rural areas, you will surely come across a number of sheds which are multipurpose in nature. Quite obviously, if you want to keep animals under a part of your machinery shed then you have to work a little harder in order to maintain the cleanliness around. Hence, it would be better to go for of a larger shed.
  • If you are living close to your farm and there are tons of not so usable items in your home then you can use your machinery shed to make your home clutter free. A lot of farmers store things that they do not use quite often.
  • For farming, a number of equipment are needed, apart from heavy machines, such as shovels, watering cans, lawn mowers, etc. In addition, different types of fertilisers and chemicals are also brought into use. These things can turn out to be dangerous for your kids if you store them at your home. So, it is better to store them at your machinery shed in order to keep your home clean.

1.6                                       ADVANTAGES OF MACHINE SHED

Good and preserved machineries are responsible for the smooth and efficient working of the industrial plant and helps in improving the productivity.

It also helps to keep the machines/equipment in their optimum operating conditions. Thus plant maintenance is an important and inevitable service function of an efficient production system.

It also helps in maintaining and improving the operational efficiency of the plant facilities and hence contributes towards revenue by decreasing the operating cost and improving the quality and quantity of the product being manufactured.

As a service function it is related with the incurrence of certain costs. The important component of such costs are — employment of maintenance staff, other minor administrative expenses, investment in maintenance equipment and inventory of repair components/ parts and maintenance materials.

Absence of plant maintenance may lead to frequent machine breakdown and failure of certain productive centres / services which in turn would result in stoppages of production activities, idle man and machine time, dislocation of the subsequent operations, poor quality of production, failure to meet delivery dates of product supply, industrial accidents endangering the life of workers/ operators and allied costs.

1.7                                       APPLICATION OF MACHINE SHED

Machine shed apart from using it for keeping machines it can also be used as other types of farm structures like farm houses, livestock structures, crop production buildings, agricultural processing buildings, storage structures, equipment, tools and supplies buildings respectively, and miscellaneous structures and their function
