Design And Construction Of An LED Chaser Light

The design and construction of an LED chaser light involves creating a circuit that sequentially illuminates multiple LEDs in a pattern, typically producing an appealing visual effect. This project entails selecting suitable components such as LEDs, resistors, transistors, and capacitors, and arranging them in a circuit configuration that allows for controlled switching of the LEDs. The construction process includes soldering the components onto a prototyping board or printed circuit board (PCB) according to a predetermined schematic diagram. The design may incorporate a microcontroller or dedicated integrated circuit (IC) to precisely control the LED sequencing pattern and speed. Additionally, considerations such as power supply requirements, heat dissipation, and enclosure design for protection and aesthetics should be taken into account. Overall, the successful implementation of an LED chaser light involves a meticulous blend of electronic design, construction techniques, and creative visual expression to achieve an eye-catching lighting display while ensuring functionality and reliability.

ABSTRACT

This project work is on an “LED CHASER LIGHTING SYSTEM” which is an electronic display used in advertising and distribution of information in public and private locations. The displays are seen mainly in many public places such as airports, train stations, and shopping malls. In this work, signs uses technology such as LED to display information and can be found in public spaces, transportation systems, museums, stadiums, retail stores, hotels, restaurants, and corporate buildings. This device was built with 555 timer ic and 4017 decade as the major components. The device was built successfully and tested, it was seen that the device performed its operation successfully.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                                        INTRODUCTION

1.1                                           BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

An LED chaser is one of the most popular types of LED-driving circuit and is widely used in advertising displays and in running-light ‘rope’ displays in small discos, etc.

It consists — in essence — of a clocked IC or other electronic unit that drives an array of LEDs in such a way that individual LEDs (or small groups of LEDs) turn on and off in a predetermined and repeating sequence, thus producing a visually attractive display in which one or more ripples of light seem to repeatedly run through a chain or around a ring of LEDs.

Light-emitting diode (LED) technology is frequently used in signs. This technology, first used primarily at sporting events, later appeared at businesses, churches, schools, and government buildings.

Signs frequently use lighting as a means of conveying their information. Light-emitting diode (LED) is highly use because it is way of way to increase visibility. LED fluoresces and scatters the light. The light transmission through the markers creates a bright and colorful display. LED’s commonly have a half-life (to 1/2 brightness) of 50,000 hours.

LED chaser light features various flashing effects that are sure to attract the attention of passersby. The flashing pattern as well as the displayed colors can be cycled with these restaurant signs. These illuminated displays could be hung on any glass surface with the use of some simple suction cups. All of the LED writing boards sold here include wall screws and anchors as well as nylon rope to hang from the overhead.

1.2                                                  PROBLEM STATEMENT

In the last time, information display boards are mostly paper-based before the invention of LED display board, and this has created inconvenience of showing the targeted people information during rainy days because the papers would be wet and wear out. Besides, it would be the possibility of the paper is not pasted on the board properly and dropped easily. After LED is introduced to the public, it is cleverly used to show information to public. However, again the problem arises when human resources, time and costs are wasted to change the information on display board placed at different locations one by one. Thus, this system is created to improvise the conventional method in such a way that the same messages can be sent to multiple LED display boards from one main system.

1.3                                              PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT

The main purpose of LED chaser lighting system is communication, to convey information such that its receiver can make cognitive decisions based on the information provided. In general, electronic sign board can be classified into the following functions:

(a). Information: signs giving information about services and facilities, e.g., maps, directories, instructions for use, etc.

(b)Direction: signs leading to services, facilities, functional spaces and key areas, e.g., sign posts, directional arrows, etc.

(c)Identification: signs indicating services and facilities, e.g., room names and numbers, toilet signs, number of floors, etc. (d)Safety and Regulatory: signs giving warning or safety instructions, e.g., warning signs, traffic signs, exit signs, rules and regulations.

1.4                                   AIM AND OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

This main objective of this work is to construct an electronics device that can be used to pass information to the public or passerby using light emitting diodes. The objectives are:

  1. To have different kinds of decoration lighting patterns
  2. To create an interesting LED blinking pattern by using a 555 timer IC and Counter IC CD 4017

1.5                                         SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT

The LED sign board is very slim and lightweight in design. LED light source, lower power consumption. Ultra slim and ultra light. Top designs for show window and guide board. This LED sign board is ideal for advertising or displaying purpose. The sign board allows you to display your advertising messages, product images at prominent places.

1.6                                      APPLICATIONS AND ADVANTAGES

This project can be used public places as well as hospitals and private companies, schools, colleges and universities.

Notice boards are particularly prevalent at universities, like this work is used to display “welcome”. They are used by many sports groups and extracurricular groups and anything from local shops to official notices. Dormitory corridors, well-trafficked hallways, lobbies, and freestanding kiosks often have Notice boards attached to facilitate the posting of notices.

1.7                                           LIMITATION OF THE PROJECT

Presently almost all electronic notice boards are designed using wired system. One of the drawbacks of the design is the system is inflexible in term of placement, that is the information placed cannot changed easily and the wiring can be messy.

1.8                                                        METHODOLOGY

To achieve the aim and objectives of this work, the following are the steps involved:

  1. Study of the previous work on the project so as to improve it efficiency.
  2. Draw a block diagram.
  • Test for continuity of components and devices,
  1. Design and calculation for the device was carried out.
  2. Studying of various component used in circuit.
  3. Construction of the circuit was carried out.
  • Finally, the whole device was cased and final test was carried out.

1.9                                                         PROJECT ORGANISATION

The work is organized as follows: chapter one discuses the introductory part of the work,   chapter two presents the literature review of the study,  chapter three describes the methods applied,  chapter four discusses the results of the work, chapter five summarizes the research outcomes and the recommendations.
