Maintaining a lawn mower is essential for ensuring its longevity and optimal performance. Regular upkeep involves several key steps, including cleaning the mower after each use to prevent grass buildup and corrosion, sharpening the blades periodically to promote clean cuts and minimize stress on the engine, checking and replacing the air filter and spark plug as needed to maintain proper engine function, and inspecting the oil level and changing the oil according to the manufacturer’s recommendations to prevent engine damage. Additionally, adjusting the mower’s cutting height to accommodate seasonal changes in grass growth and storing it properly in a clean, dry area when not in use can further prolong its lifespan and efficiency. Following these maintenance practices diligently can enhance the mower’s reliability and ensure a well-kept lawn, while also reducing the risk of costly repairs down the line.

ABSTRACT

A lawn mower is a machine that uses one or more revolving blades to cut a lawn to an even height. The blades may be powered either by hand pushing the mower forward to operate the mechanical blade(s), or may have an electric motor or an internal combustion engine to spin their blades. Some mowers also include other abilities, like mulching or collecting their clippings. In order to acquire peace-of-mind about your lawn mower, one will need to perform routine maintenance which does not take lot of time or money to properly service the mower; it just takes a little diligence and common-sense. The main aim of this work is to discuss how a lawn mower can be maintained.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Lawn mower (also known as grass cutter, mower) is a machine utilizing one or more revolving blade to cut grass surface to an even height. The height of the cut grass maybe fixed by the design of mower, but generally, it is adjustable by the operator.

Lawn mower was invented in the year 1830 by Edwin beard budding. Over the years, Lawn mower has gained it’s place as the most effective equipment for grass cutting for both small scale and large scale farm lands, which lead to the importance of proper maintenance of the lawn mower machine.

As a result of the continuous use of the lawn mower machine like other machine, the lawn mower gradually develops some fault and if not properly maintained, it may lead to the machine been damaged. It is therefore advisable for anyone who wishes to keep his/her lawn mower machine working in a good and long lasting condition there is the need for adequate check and maintenance of the lawn mower machine

1.1 SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY:

It is expected that the outcome of the study will help to identify the type of maintenance to be performed, when to perform it, in order to reduce the number of abandoned lawn mower due to lack of proper maintenance

1.2 Aims and objective of study:

Aims of Study:

The aim of the study is to understand the working principle of lawn mower, identify reoccurring failure and to perform the basic maintenance needed.

Objectives:

In order to achieve the aim, the following specific objectives aare to be pursued

Visit a lawn mower mechanic workshop
Study the mower, maintenance, repairs, overhauling and service job cards
Listen to lawn mower operators complaints as regards to lawn mower failure
Engine troubleshoot
Perform the basic maintenance

1.3 Statement of problem

In the past and even until now, cutting grass in the schools, sports tracks, fields, industries, public center, etc., was done with a cutlass. This method of manual cutting is time consuming because human effort is needed for the cutting. Also inaccuracy in cutting level was observed using the manual cutting method. The invention of this device came to solve this problem in that it replaces man power, it is fast and accurate more than traditional method of cutting grass.

Availability of skilled technicians

Availability of genuine part of lawn mower during maintenance/repair

Climatic condition of areas where lawn mower will be operated or used
Customers (operators) failing to read the guideline on how to operate and maintain the lawn mower which in turn causes untimely breakdown of the machine.
