Problem Of Teaching And Learning History In Secondary School
This study was carried out to examine the problem of teaching and learning history in secondary school in Bade local government area of Yobe State. Specifically the study was carried out to ascertain the extent history education curriculum is implemented in secondary schools, find out whether the teachers adopt appropriate instructional method for the effective teaching of history in secondary schools, and find out the challenges of teaching history in secondary schools. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of History teachers of some selected secondary schools in Bade local government area of Yobe State. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 59 respondents and 50 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables. The result of the findings reveals that History education curriculum is not adequately implemented in secondary schools in Yobe State. The study also revealed that the adoption of inappropriate instructional method affect the effective teaching of history in secondary schools. Therefore, it is recommended that educational policies should be designed to draw more attention to History. The government should initiate 21st century policies at junior secondary school level and make it one of the core educational subjects. To mention but a few.
