Design And Construction Of A PC-Based Stepper Motor Controller

A PC-based stepper motor controller refers to a system that utilizes a personal computer (PC) to control the operation of stepper motors, which are electromechanical devices used for precise motion control. The design and construction of such a controller involve integrating hardware and software components to enable communication between the PC and the stepper motor. Hardware components typically include a microcontroller or specialized stepper motor driver board connected to the PC via USB, serial, or parallel ports, along with power supply units and motor drivers. The software aspect involves developing a user-friendly interface on the PC using programming languages like C++, Python, or LabVIEW, allowing users to send commands to the stepper motor controller and specify parameters such as speed, direction, and step size. Additionally, the software may incorporate features for monitoring motor performance, implementing motion profiles, and interfacing with other devices or sensors for automation purposes. The design and construction process entails careful selection of hardware components, circuit design, firmware development for the microcontroller, and software programming to create a robust and efficient PC-based stepper motor control system.

ABSTRACT

A pair of H-bridges with a software program written in ‘C++’ is used to control the bipolar stepper motor with a step resolution of 18 degree per pulse.

The PC based stepper motor controller is a combination of driver and switching circuits. The driver is the actual circuit that drives the stepper motor and the switching circuit decides how the motor should be driven. So, it is basically the switching circuit that controls the motor. The transistors (T1 through T8) act as switches. The switching of these transistors is controlled by the software via data pins D0 through D7.

With this device one can control three parameters of the stepper motor: speed, direction and number of steps.
