ABSTRACT

This project work is on an electronic school’s notice board using LED which is an electronic display board used in displaying our school’s signboard to the public and strategic locations. The displays are seen mainly in many public and strategic places such as school’s junction, entrance gate, and exit gate. In this work, the schools name is displays using technology such as LED to display the information which is the main aim of the project.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                                        INTRODUCTION

1.1                                           BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Notice board is a surface intended for the posting of public messages, for example, to advertise items wanted or for sale, announce events, or provide information. This notice board is made of a light emitting diode, or they can be placed on the road or public places so people can other people to read and see.

Light-emitting diode (LED) technology is frequently used in signs. This technology, first used primarily at sporting events, later appeared at businesses, churches, schools, and government buildings.

Signs frequently use lighting as a means of conveying their information. Light-emitting diode (LED) is highly use because it is way of way to increase visibility. LED fluoresces and scatters the light. The light transmission through the markers creates a bright and colorful display. LED’s commonly have a half-life (to 1/2 brightness) of 50,000 hours.

LED notice board features various flashing effects that are sure to attract the attention of passersby. The flashing pattern as well as the displayed colors can be cycled with these school signs. These illuminated displays could be hung on any glass surface with the use of some simple suction cups. Use these flashing write-on signs as an advertising medium in a restaurant or nightclub. Bar owners choose these LED writing boards to announce live bands appearing throughout the week, or to list the featured drink specials.

The framing on these advertising signs are solid metal with a black painted finish. The profile on these LED writing boards is one inch deep, thereby conforming to ADA requirements for items mounted on a wall.

This work focused on designing an LED based electronics signboard that displays the name of our school – UNIOSUN. These LED writing boards feature a clear acrylic covering that is easily cleaned. This LED sign board, also known as an advertising signs, feature small lights running the perimeter of the black frame. When this illuminated sign board is turned on, these lights make your graphics glow, as if under a black light. These LED writing boards also have the capability to be illuminated with no blinking lights. The lighting technology in these menu displays is quite advanced. This LED sign board feature bright, equally distributed lighting so that even the center of the unit is bright. Additionally, with this LED writing board there is never any need to worry about light bulbs being blown. The technology on these menu signs uses diodes as the primary source of light.

1.2                                                  PROBLEM STATEMENT

In the last decade, information display boards that displays school’s name (like our school’s name – UNIOSUN) are mostly paper-based before the invention of LED display board, and this has created convenience of showing the targeted people information during rainy days and night because the papers would be wet, wear out and cannot be seen during dark hours. Besides, it would be the possibility of the paper is not pasted on the board properly and dropped easily. After LED is introduced to the public, it is cleverly used to show information to public. However, again the problem arises when human resources, time and costs are wasted to change the information on display board placed at different locations one by one. Thus, this system is created to improvise the conventional method in such a way that the same messages can be displayed using LED.

1.3                                              PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT

The main purpose of signboard is communication, to convey information such that its receiver can make cognitive decisions based on the information provided. This purpose of displaying schools name using LED is to convey the school’s name to the public so that it can be seen by someone from a distance even during dark hours.

1.4                                        AIM/OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

This main aim of this work is to construct an electronics device that displays our school’s signboard that can be used to pass information to the public or passerby using light emitting diodes. This work displays “UNIOSUN”.

Specifically, at the end of this study will achieve the following objectives:

  1. To display “UNIOSUN”
  2. To use the electronic display system constructed as a sign post for university of Osun.

1.5                                         SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT

The LED sign board that displays our school’s name (UNIOSUN) is very slim and lightweight in design. LED is the light source, which has lower power consumption. This LED sign board is ideal for displaying purpose. The sign board allows us to display our school’s signboard using LED.

1.6                                      APPLICATIONS AND ADVANTAGES

This project can be used public places as well as hospitals and private companies, schools, colleges and universities.

Notice boards are particularly prevalent at universities, like this work is used to display our school’s name “UNIOSUN”. They are used by many sports groups and extracurricular groups and anything from local shops to official notices. Dormitory corridors, well-trafficked hallways, lobbies, and freestanding kiosks often have Notice boards attached to facilitate the posting of notices.

1.7                                           LIMITATION OF THE PROJECT

Presently almost all electronic notice boards are designed using wired system. One of the drawbacks of the design is the system is inflexible in term of placement, that is the information placed cannot changed easily and the wiring can be messy.

1.8                                                    RESEARCH QUESTIONS

This research will try to provide answers to the following research questions:

1) What is electronic display system?

2) How can electronic display system be constructed?

3) What are the users of electronic display system?

4) What are the benefits of electronic display system?

5) What kind of content that can be shown on electronic display system?

1.9                                                        METHODOLOGY

To achieve the aim and objectives of this work, the following are the steps involved:

  1. Study of the previous work on the project so as to improve it efficiency.
  2. Draw a block diagram.
  • Test for continuity of components and devices,
  1. Design and calculation for the device was carried out.
  2. Studying of various component used in circuit.
  3. Construction of the circuit was carried out.
  • Finally, the whole device was cased and final test was carried out.

1.10                                                      PROJECT ORGANISATION

The work is organized as follows: chapter one discuses the introductory part of the work, chapter two presents the literature review of the study, chapter three describes the methods applied, chapter four discusses the results of the work, chapter five summarizes the research outcomes and the recommendations.
