Assessment Of Factors Responsible For Poor Academic Performance Of Senior Secondary School In Christian Religious Studies

In Yenegoa L.G.A Bayelsa State

This study was carried out to assess the factors responsible for poor academic performance of senior secondary school in christian religious studies in Yenegoa L.G.A Bayelsa State.  The study was carried out to ascertain whether insufficient numbers of qualified teachers affects students’ academic performance in christian religious studies, ascertain whether unavailability of instructional materials for teaching affects students’ academic performance in christian religious studies, determine the extent poor method of teaching affect teaching and learning of christian religious studies, and determine the extent interest and attitudes of students and teachers affect the teaching and learning of christian religious studies in the secondary schools. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of christian religious studies teachers and students of some selected secondary schools in Yenegoa L.G.A Bayelsa State. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 200 respondents and 150 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables. While the hypotheses were tested using Chi-square statistical tool. The result of the findings reveals that insufficient numbers of qualified teachers affects students’ academic performance in christian religious studies. The study also revealed that the Interest and attitudes of students and teachers affect the teaching and learning of christian religious studies in the secondary schools to a very high extent. Therefore, it is recommended that the problems of students poor performance would be reduced when teachers who are competent and qualified are employed and who also would adopt the use of instructional materials. To mention but a few.

The main purpose of this study is to find out the factors responsible for poor academic performance of senior secondary school in christian religious studies in Yenegoa L.G.A Bayelsa State. Specifically, the study sought to

  1. Ascertain whether Insufficient numbers of qualified teachers affects students’ academic performance in christian religious studies.
  2. Ascertain whether unavailability of instructional materials for teaching affects students’ academic performance in christian religious studies.
  3. Determine the extent poor method of teaching affect teaching and learning of christian religious studies.
  4. Determine the extent interest and attitudes of students and teachers affect the teaching and learning of christian religious studies in the secondary schools.

In assessing the purpose of the study, this research project will answer the following questions:

  1. Does Insufficient numbers of qualified teachers affects students’ academic performance in christian religious studies?
  2. Does unavailability of instructional materials for teaching affects students’ academic performance in christian religious studies
  3. To what extent does poor method of teaching affect teaching and learning of christian religious studies?
  4. To what extent does interest and attitudes of students and teachers affect the teaching and learning of christian religious studies in the secondary schools?

5.1 Introduction

This chapter summarizes the findings on the factors responsible for poor academic performance of senior secondary school in Christian Religious Studies in Yenegoa L.G.A Bayelsa State. The chapter consists of summary of the study, conclusions, and recommendations.

5.2 Summary of the Study

In this study, our focus was to examine the factors responsible for poor academic performance of senior secondary school in Christian Religious Studies in Yenegoa L.G.A Bayelsa State. The study was specifically set to ascertain whether insufficient numbers of qualified teachers affects students’ academic performance in Christian Religious Studies, ascertain whether unavailability of instructional materials for teaching affects students’ academic performance in Christian Religious Studies, determine the extent poor method of teaching affect teaching and learning of Christian Religious Studies, and determine the extent interest and attitudes of students and teachers affect the teaching and learning of Christian Religious Studies in the secondary schools.

The study adopted the survey research design and randomly enrolled participants in the study. A total of 150 responses were validated from the enrolled participants where all respondent are Christian Religious Studies teachers and students of some selected secondary schools in Yenegoa L.G.A Bayelsa State.

5.3 Conclusions

Based on the findings of this study, the researcher made the following conclusion.

  1. Insufficient numbers of qualified teachers affects students’ academic performance in Christian Religious Studies.
  2. Unavailability of instructional materials for teaching affects students’ academic performance in Christian Religious Studies.
  3. Poor method of teaching affect teaching and learning of Christian Religious Studies to a very high extent.
  4. Interest and attitudes of students and teachers affect the teaching and learning of Christian Religious Studies in the secondary schools to a very high extent.

5.4 Recommendations

Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendations are proffered.

  1. Teachers are implored to teach with adequate teaching aids and instructional materials, improve their methods of teaching among others.
  2. The problems of students poor performance would be reduced when teachers who are competent and qualified are employed and who also would adopt the use of instructional materials.
  3. School proprietors’ should as a matter of policy, purchase instructional aids which should be used by the teachers in their teaching of the student. If all these are done, they will go a long way in solving the problem of poor performance of students in Christian Religious Studies.
  4. Students should work to change their attitude towards Christian Religious Studies teachers can help in encouraging the learner by giving relevant examples.
  5. The ministry of education should seek for more funds from the government to raise the salaries of teachers to motivate them.
