Impact Of Computer Science Laboratory On Students’ Academic Performance

The aim of this study is to assess the impact of computer science laboratory on students’ academic performance using selected secondary schools in Benin City, Edo State as a case study. The study specifically was carried out to investigate the role of computer science laboratory in enhancing students’ learning quality in secondary schools in Nigeria; investigate the impact of computer science laboratory on students’ study habit in secondary schools in Nigeria; investigate the role of computer science laboratory in promoting problem-solving and critical thinking skills secondary school students in in Nigeria; and investigate the impact of computer science laboratory on students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Nigeria. The study adopted the survey research design and conveniently enrolled participants in the study.  The population size for the study is two hundred and thirty-two (232). With the aid of the Yamane sampling technique, the researcher calculated a sample size of one hundred and forty-seven (147) participants. Self- structured questionnaire was issued to the respondent of which one hundred and forty-one (141) responses were retrieved and validated for the study. The study made use of of descriptive analysis and inferential statistics where data from field survey was analyzed using simple percentage, mean and standard deviation presented in frequencies and tables. Hypothesis test was conducted using Chi-square Statistical Tool.  The findings of this study indicate that computer science laboratories have a profound impact on students’ academic performance and personal development in secondary schools in Benin City, Edo State. The findings demonstrate that these laboratories play a crucial role in enhancing learning quality, promoting study habits, developing problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and fostering technical proficiency. Therefore, the study recommended that the government and educational institutions should prioritize the funding and provision of well-equipped computer science laboratories to ensure that all students have access to practical learning experiences that enhance academic performance.

1.0 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

In recent years, computer science education has gained critical importance globally, shaping the modern academic curriculum and fostering skills essential for the digital era. In Nigeria, this relevance is underscored by the National Policy on Education, which emphasizes the need for information and communication technology (ICT) integration in secondary schools to enhance learning outcomes and prepare students for a technology-driven world (Federal Ministry of Education, 2015). With the increasing reliance on technology across various sectors, computer science laboratories in schools are positioned as vital tools for student engagement and mastery of computational skills, ultimately influencing academic performance (Nworie, 2020).

A computer science laboratory provides students with hands-on access to computers, programming tools, and software that support the practical application of theoretical knowledge. Studies indicate that practical exposure through well-equipped computer labs promotes higher retention rates, improves comprehension of complex concepts, and cultivates critical thinking abilities (Adeyemi & Jegede, 2017). This environment fosters not only cognitive skills but also practical competencies, as students engage in problem-solving exercises that mirror real-world applications of computer science. Scholars have argued that integrating a laboratory-based approach in computer science classes helps bridge the gap between theory and application, equipping students with transferable skills essential for their academic progression and future career paths (Akpan & Orokpo, 2019).

In Nigeria, the digital divide presents a substantial barrier to educational equality. Rural and underserved schools often lack sufficient technological infrastructure, including access to computers and internet connectivity, limiting students’ exposure to ICT and computer science skills. Consequently, a disparity exists in academic outcomes between students who have access to computer science laboratories and those who do not, further emphasizing the importance of equitable technology provision in schools (Kalu & Osisioma, 2021). A functional computer science laboratory can empower students to develop proficiency in digital literacy, a necessity in today’s globalized world, where knowledge of ICT has become an essential competency.

Moreover, integrating computer science laboratories in secondary schools aligns with the national goals for human capital development, aiming to foster a technologically savvy generation capable of contributing to Nigeria’s growing digital economy. Several studies support the notion that students exposed to computer science labs are likely to demonstrate enhanced academic performance, not only in computer science but across other subjects, as the cognitive skills acquired are transferable to multiple domains (Ola & Alao, 2022). As such, a computer science laboratory is more than a space for learning specific digital skills; it is an environment that cultivates overall academic improvement, aligns with pedagogical best practices, and supports Nigeria’s broader developmental objectives.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the established importance of computer science in today’s educational landscape, many Nigerian secondary schools lack adequate facilities to support effective computer science education. The absence or insufficiency of functional computer science laboratories is a pressing concern, particularly in rural and underserved areas where students often have limited exposure to digital tools and resources. This disparity creates an unequal learning environment that affects students’ academic performance and diminishes their competitiveness in a technology-centric global market (Olawale, 2021).

Previous research indicates that students who engage with technology through well-equipped computer science labs perform better academically, as these environments promote active learning, critical thinking, and skill acquisition (Adesanya & Musa, 2022). However, in many Nigerian secondary schools, computer science is still taught predominantly through theoretical instruction, with minimal hands-on experience. This gap hinders students’ ability to fully understand and apply computer science concepts, thereby impacting their overall academic performance and career readiness.

Given the crucial role of computer science laboratories in student learning outcomes, there is an urgent need to address the factors limiting their establishment and effectiveness in Nigerian secondary schools. Without intervention, the lack of access to such facilities may continue to contribute to suboptimal academic performance and restrict students’ potential to succeed in a digital economy. This study aims to examine the impact of computer science laboratories on students’ academic performance.

1.3 Objective of the Study

The general objective of this study is to examine the impact of computer science laboratory on students’ academic performance. The specific objective is as follows:
