Overview

ABSTRAC

This project is to design and develop low cost auto gate system for house. Automatic gate is one of the most preferable domestic intended to provide easy access to gate home. There are three types of automatic gate mechanism, such as sliding, screw drive piston and swing cubic underground. Designs available today are limited only to the three types mentioned.

In this final year project work, we attempt to construct a small and simple model of low cost mechanical Gate System, which uses a large screw with fabricated door belt, pulley, connecting rods, fixtures, mounts, motor, mini gate and supporting frame. The main activities involved in this project are the research done on how the mechanical garage gate works, sketching a detailed plan  of  the  gates,  welding  (Arc  Welding)  the  metal  pieces  together  to  form  the  gate, purchasing the correct power motor and circuit’s and gate together and finally the test run.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                                        INTRODUCTION

1.1                                           BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

A garage gate opener is a motorized device that opens and closes garage doors controlled by switches on the garage wall.

The theory of the automatic gate is very simple, when  we press the open  switch, a signal is sent to the main circuitry board which then allows the current to pass through to the gates motor causing the motor to run and the gate open. Once the gate is fully open the operator will press the neutral position of the switch which will cause the motor to stop moving. When the close button is pressed the same thing happens but this time the motor run in the reverse direction, therefore causing the gate close [1].

Gates are commonly used nowadays at residential area. A gate is a point of entry to a space enclosed by walls, or an opening in a garage [2]. Gates may prevent or control entry or exit, or they may be merely decorative. Today many gate doors are opened by an automated gate operator. Those gates come with many special features. The need for automatic garage gates has been on the increase in recent times. The system described here incorporates the use of actuator to control the movement of the gate automatically. The gates have to perform gyrations by open, auto reverse, stop, fully close and fully stop. It provides convenient access and intelligent features that makes it distinct from all other gates which bring it so close to a security device [3]. Those gates come with different type of mechanism such as sliding, swing, folding,  and  barrier  gate.    Those mechanisms  have  their  own  working principle and feature but, automatic gate design seem limited at the local market[4]. This work was carried out which aimed at building a mechanical garage gate opener.

1.2                                                  PROBLEM STATEMENT

Lots of energy is inserted when opening and closing a sliding garage gate due to the weight of the gate. To solve this problem a mechanical garage gate opener was used. This gate opens/closes automatically whenever a switch is pressed or selected.

1.3                                   AIM AND OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

The aim of this project is fabricate a low cost and portable belt operated mechanical garage gate opener

1.4                                                   SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This work is a belt drive openers which drive the gate motor forward and backward. A two – way changeover switch was used for the fabrication which changes the rotation of the motor. A DC motor was used to drive the gate with a large screw.

1.5                                                  LIMITATION OF STUDY

As we all know that no human effort to achieve a set of goals goes without difficulties, certain constraints were encountered in the course of carrying out this project and they are as follows:-

  1. Difficulty in information collection: I found it too difficult in laying hands of useful information regarding this work and this course me to visit different libraries and internet for solution.
  2. Financial Constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet).

Time Constraint:   The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work.

Finally, the fabrication of this gate can only be implemented with a sliding gate. The opening and closing is done using a switch which is been selected by the operator. When power fails opening if the system becomes critical.

1.5                                                      SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research work will throw more light on the control the direction of electric motor. This study will also be designed to be of immense benefit to all the users of electric motor most especially in industries and also to the student that involved in this project.

1.5                                             RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

In the course of carrying this study, numerous sources were used which most of them are by visiting libraries, consulting journal and news papers and online research which Google was the major source that was used.

1.6                                     PROJECT ORGANISATION

The work is organized as follows: chapter one discuses the introductory part of the work,   chapter two presents the literature review of the study,  chapter three describes the methods applied, chapter four discusses the results of the work, chapter five summarizes the research outcomes and the recommendations.
