Overview

ABSTRACT

Energy crisis, ozone depletion, and global warming have become more and more serious with the social development. The amount of energy consumed by air conditioners, refrigerators (freezers), and water heaters is increasing rapidly, and occupies about 30% of the total power consumption [Jahangeer et al, 2011]. The first invented freezer was made to receive energy from our 220vac but the energy consumption was estimated to be high. Electricity consumption for cooling systems has been estimated around 45% for residential and commercial buildings. Because of the rapid growth in world population and economy, the total world energy consumption is projected to increase by about 71% from 2003 to 2030 [Wimolsiri et al, 2014]. As a result of this projection a solar powered freezer was invented which uses renewable energy. The objective of this work is to identify the cooling difference between main and solar powered chest freezer.

1.0                                        INTRODUCTION

1.1                          BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

A freezer is known as one of commercial and home appliance that maintains a temperature below the freezing point of water.

Freezer units are used in households as well as in industry and commerce. Commercial freezer units were in use for almost 40 years prior to the common home models. The freezer-over-refrigerator style had been the basic style since the 1940s, until modern, side-by-side refrigerators broke the trend. A vapor compression cycle is used in most household freezers. Newer refrigerators may include automatic defrosting, chilled water, and ice from a dispenser in the door.

Domestic freezers for food storage are made in a range of sizes. Among the smallest are Peltier-type refrigerators designed to chill beverages.

Freezer units are used in households and in industry and commerce. Food stored at or below −18 °C (0 °F) is safe indefinitely (James, 2013) Most household freezers maintain temperatures from −23 to −18 °C (−9 to 0 °F), although some freezer-only units can achieve −34 °C (−29 °F) and lower. freezers generally do not achieve lower than −23 °C (−9 °F), since the same coolant loop serves both compartments: Lowering the freezer compartment temperature excessively causes difficulties in maintaining above-freezing temperature in the refrigerator compartment. Domestic freezers can be included as a separate compartment in a refrigerator, or can be a separate appliance. Domestic freezers may be either upright units resembling a refrigerator, or chests (with the lid or door on top, sacrificing convenience for efficiency and partial immunity to power outages) (Feist et al, 2014) Many modern upright freezers come with an ice dispenser built into their door. Some upscale models include thermostat displays and controls, and sometimes flat screen televisions as well.

Chest freezers type, have certain advantages. Cold air is heavier than warm air. Cold air this type freezer is not “throw out” when the lid is opened. This stops a significant amount of moisture inside the Cabinet. Little air changes when the Cabinet is opened.

Some features can be added to the breast-freezers type, to improve the convenience in using them. They are usually equipped with baskets that can be derived. Thus, it provides access to the frozen-food packages in the lower part of the window. In addition, the cover, as a rule, have a counterbalancing mechanism that makes them easy to open. The light in the cover gives a good coverage. Chest-type freezers is a cost-effective type of food-freezing device.

Some chest-deep-freezers type require manual defrost. Little moisture enters the freezer, however. Therefore, defrost, as a rule, is not required more than once or twice a year. Defrosting can be achieved best to pull the condensing unit. Then delete the stored food. Place an electric heater or a bucket or two of hot water inside.

With a closed Cabinet, ice will soon disappear with the surface of the evaporator. It will be easy to remove. Today, chest freezer has existed in two forms – mains and solar powered. The objective of this work is to identify the cooling difference between main and solar powered chest freezer.

1.2     PROBLEM STATEMENT

There have been an argument and confusion among the user even among mechanical engineering students on the cooling comparisons between mains and solar powered chest freezer after been made known to them that mains powered freezer receives energy from our mains supply while solar chest freezer receives its energy from renewable source (solar panel). This study seeks to bring an end to the argument and confusion.

1.3       AIM AND OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The main aim of the study is to carry out a comparative analysis of chest type of freezer powered from the mains and solar powered type.

The objectives are:

  1. To understand their differences
  2. To enable the user to make right choice
  • To understand the cooling difference between mains and solar powered chest-type freezer

1.4                                  SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The scope of this work covers the cooling system of mains and solar powered chest-type freezer.  Cooling system is to transfer thermal energy in order to keep things cool. In this work, comparative analysis of chest type of freezer powered from the mains and solar powered type is carried out.

1.5                                  RESEARCH QUESTION

At the end of this study, answers to the following questions shall be provided:

  1. How is a freezer cooled?
  2. Which is colder, main or solar chest freezer?
  • Which one is advantageous, main or solar chest freezer?

1.6                   SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

The research work will enable us to know the difference between main and solar powered chest freezer. The result obtained will be used to create awareness and educate the public about the cooling system of freezer.

This study will help every producer to maintain adequate standard of their freezer in terms of their cooling system.
