Design And Construction Of A Transistor Tester

The design and construction of a transistor tester entail the development of a comprehensive electronic instrument capable of accurately assessing the characteristics and functionality of transistors. This endeavor involves intricate circuitry comprising various components such as resistors, capacitors, and integrated circuits, orchestrated to perform tasks including transistor identification, pinout determination, and parameter measurement. The construction process integrates principles of electrical engineering and electronic design, aiming to create a robust and reliable device suitable for both hobbyist and professional applications. Key considerations encompass the selection of appropriate components, optimization of circuit layout for enhanced performance, and integration of user-friendly features for intuitive operation. Through meticulous design and meticulous assembly, the transistor tester emerges as a versatile tool, facilitating efficient testing and validation of transistors across a spectrum of electronic projects and applications.

ABSTRACT

In electronics most commonly required component is transistor. Therefore the testing of the transistor is very important to avoid the future inconvenience and the loss to the manufacturer. Transistor tester is an instrument which is used to test the electrical behavior of a transistor. Commonly used devises to test the transistor are costly. So, in order to rectify this problem, we will go for transistor tester using transistors. This report will explain the circuit based on the above. In this system, we will use current meter to identify the condition of the given transistor to be tested.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                          INTRODUCTION

1.1                            BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Bipolar junction transistors are often used in physical laboratory and in different electrical and electronic circuits for a variety of purposes. Sometimes during experiments or projects, they are required to test functioning of transistors.

A circuit tester is used to check whether a transistor which has previously been performing properly in a circuit is still operational. The transistor’s ability to “amplify” is taken as a rough index of its performance. This type of tester indicates to a technician whether the transistor is dead or still operative.

Some service testers include a go/no-go feature, indicating a pass when a certain hfe is exceeded. These are useful, but fail some functional but low hfe transistors.

Some also provide a means of identifying transistor elements, if these are unknown. The tester has all these features and can check solid-state devices in and out of circuit.

Transistor hfe varies fairly widely with Ic, so measurements with the service type tester give readings that can differ quite a bit from the hfe in the transistor’s real life application. Hence these testers are useful, but can’t be regarded as giving accurate real-life hfe values.

Transistor testers have the necessary controls and switches for making the proper voltage, current and signal settings. A meter with a calibrated “good” and “bad” scale is on the front.

This work is aimed at building a transistor tester is a tool that can be used to test the capability of various types of transistors. If any problem occurs due to transistors in the circuit board or motherboard of a device, then we can identify that problem with the use of a transistor tester.

1.2                                                  PROBLEM STATEMENT

Multimeter is commonly used in testing transistors which tests transistor pins resistance. The challenge of using multimeter in carryout this test is that it is time consuming, costly and requires high level of professionalism. To overcome this challenge  a simple transistor tester was built which is fast in indicating the state of a transistor and which does not need any form of professionalism and also cheap.

1.3                                    AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The main aim of this study is to build a device that is used to check whether a transistor is faulty or not. The objectives of the work are:

  1. To build the circuit
  2. To ensure that a transistor is in good conditions
  • To make electronics work easy.

1.4                                                 BENEFIT OF THE STUDY

The transistor tester is a very important instrumental tool for field technicians. Keeping its usefulness in mind, anyone who does technical work will definitely recommend it. It is a great alternative to a multimeter for testing or measuring the value of almost all types of components. This device has the ability to give a new dimension to the hardware industry. This is a very helpful tool for those who repair tv, laptop, pc. For a technician, the meters or testers like the multimeter, transistor tester, or clamp meter are very useful and increases their productivity.

1.5                             APPLICATION OF THE STUDY

Transistor Tester is an instrumental tool primarily designed for field:

  1. technicians,
  2. hardware workers,
  • and repairers.

1.6                 SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE PROJECT

The scope of this work covers the building of a transistor tester which has the capacity of testing both NPN and PNP transistors. The transistor tester has a specific area with some little holes where the transistor legs are placed and their capacity is measured or tested.

Only detect whether Transistor is good or damage and does not show internal problem of the transistor. At a time only one transistor can be tested.

1.7                                                   RESEARCH QUESTION

At the end of this work this research work shall bring answers to the following questions:

  1. What is the use of transistor tester?
  2. Which device is used for transistor testing?
  • How do transistor testers work?
  1. How do you test a transistor?

1.8                             SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

To technicians, transistor tester will help them to ensure accuracy in their work while doing technical work and you demand to save both your time and money while doing that work, then a transistor tester is the best instrument for you. Transistor Tester will increase someone productivity increases due to which you get more profit by making your work fast. Due to the transistor testers, the work of technicians has become so easy today that they could not live without giving it the status of a compulsory tool.

The device is small size and minimal weight, allowing the development of miniaturized electronic devices. It has low operating voltages compatible with batteries of only a few cells, Lower power dissipation and generally greater energy efficiency and higher reliability and greater physical ruggedness.
