Abstract

This study was carried out to examine the influence of the social media on the academic performance of mass communication students using University of Calabar as a case study. The study was carried out to determine the extent of social media utilization among Mass Communication Students in University of Calabar, ascertain the social media platforms commonly utilized by Mass Communication Students in University of Calabar, ascertain the relationship between social media usage and the academic performance of Mass Communication Students, and investigate how the perceived influences of social media influences the academic performance of Mass Communication Students in University of Calabar. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprised of mass communication students in University of Calabar. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 147 respondents and 141 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables, and mean scores. While the hypotheses was tested Pearson correlation statistical tool, SPSS v23. The result of the findings reveals that the extent of social media utilization among Mass Communication Students in University of Calabar is high. Furthermore, the study revealed that the negative effects of social media on the academic performance of Mass Communication students in Nigeria are multifaceted and can significantly impact their educational journey. Therefore, it is recommended that the use of Social media network by students should focus on the academic relevance of those sites instead of using them for negative purposes. This is not good for democracy. To mention but a few.

Aims and Objectives

The main aim of this study is to examine the influence of the social media on the academic performance of mass communication students in University of Calabar. Other aims of this study are:

  1. Determine the extent of social media utilization among Mass Communication Students in University of Calabar.
  2. Ascertain the social media platforms commonly utilized by Mass Communication Students in University of Calabar.
  3. Ascertain the relationship between social media usage and the academic performance of Mass Communication Students.
  4. Investigate how the perceived influences of social media influences the academic performance of Mass Communication Students in University of Calabar.

Hypothesis of the Study

The following hypotheses are generated by the researcher and was tested in this study:

Ho: There is no significant relationship between usage and the academic performance of Mass Communication Students

Ha: There is a significant relationship between usage and the academic performance of Mass Communication Students.

Research Questions

The following research questions were raised;

  1. What is the extent of social media utilization among Mass Communication Students in University of Calabar?
  2. What are the social media platforms commonly utilized by Mass Communication Students in University of Calabar?
  3. Is there any relationship between social media usage and the academic performance of Mass Communication Students?
  4. How does social media influences the academic performance of Mass Communication Students in University of Calabar?
