Role Of Community Newspapers In Political Awareness
Chapters: 1-5 | Type: Project
Abstract
This study explored the role of community newspapers in political awareness in Oke-Ogun, Ilorin South Local Government Area. The study aimed to assess the extent of readership of community newspapers among residents, evaluate their effectiveness in promoting political education, examine their role in stimulating political interest and participation, and identify barriers impeding their effectiveness in promoting political awareness. The study adopted a descriptive research design. The population comprised 6,300 residents of Oke-Ogun in Ilorin South LGA, from which a sample size of 376 was determined using Taro Yamane"s formula. A multi-stage sampling technique involving stratified and convenience sampling was used to ensure broad representation. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistical tools. Descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) were used to answer the research questions, while Chi-square, Pearson correlation, and logistic regression were used to test the four hypotheses. Findings showed that community newspapers had a significant readership (mean = 3.19), were effective in promoting political education (mean = 3.22), and in stimulating political participation (mean = 3.15). Chi-square analysis revealed a significant readership extent (X² = 10.21, p = 0.0014), while Pearson correlation showed a positive relationship between newspaper readership and political education (r = 0.437, p = 0.000), and political participation (r = 0.402, p = 0.000). Logistic regression showed that barriers such as poor funding (B = 0.756, p = 0.000) and inadequate circulation (B = 0.842, p = 0.000) significantly impeded newspaper effectiveness. It was recommended that community newspapers should receive funding support, simplify political content for wider comprehension, collaborate with civic organizations for voter education, and improve distribution channels, especially in rural areas.
