Abstract
This study examines the usage of computer applications in the teaching and learning of mathematics education courses in Colleges of Education within the North-West geo-political zone of Nigeria. The primary aim is to assess the extent to which computer applications are integrated into the teaching and learning process, focusing on mathematics education. Specific objectives include evaluating the skills of mathematics education lecturers in using computers, determining the availability and utilization of computers in classrooms, identifying challenges in their use, and assessing how these resources enhance student learning. A descriptive research design was employed, utilizing a structured questionnaire to gather data from 189 lecturers and 120 NCE III students across 11 colleges. The findings reveal that while computers are available, their utilization and integration into teaching practices are not optimal, with challenges including inadequate infrastructure and insufficient training. The study highlights the need for enhanced computer skills training for lecturers, improved access to technology, and addressing the challenges of computer usage in teaching. Recommendations include increased investment in computer resources, professional development for lecturers, and the development of strategies to overcome existing challenges. The study aims to contribute to improving the quality of mathematics education through better integration of technology in teaching.
