Abstract
This study was carried out to examine the knowledge and application of nursing process in patient care by nurses of Federal Medical Centre Umuahia Abia State. The study was specifically carried out to ascertain the level of nurses knowledge on the uses of nursing process among nurses in Federal Medical Centre Umuahia Abia State, and find out the factors influencing the application of nursing process among nurses in Federal Medical Centre Umuahia Abia State. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of selected nurses in Federal Medical Centre Umuahia Abia State. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 57 respondents and 50 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables, and mean scores. While the hypotheses were tested using Chi-square statistical tool. The result of the findings reveals that the level of nurses knowledge on the application of nursing process among nurses in Federal Medical Centre Umuahia Abia State is low. The study also revealed that the factors influencing the application of nursing process among nurses in Federal Medical Centre Umuahia Abia State includes: lack of further nursing process training ,absence of monitoring & supervision, inadequate nursing staff numbers, lack of managerial support, and the non-availability of the care plan forms in the ward. Therefore, it is recommended that there should be periodic workshops and seminars on the nursing process, in order for nursing tutors to equip them with the needed skills and confidence to value and teach the nursing process. This would lead to a better understanding of nursing students on how they can put the acquired knowledge into practice after their completion of school. To mention but a few.
