The methodology employed in this study was premised on the inductive method, using the bibliographic research. Chapter One

Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The Russian-Ukrainian War is an armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine in which pro-Russian rebel forces are involved. It began in February 2014, following the Ukrainian Revolution of Dignity, and was first focused on the international perception of Crimea and the Donbass as part of Ukraine. The takeover of Crimea by Russia in 2014 and the battle in Donbas between Ukraine and Russian-backed separatists (2014-present), as well as nautical disasters, espionage, and political upheaval, highlighted the very first eight years of the conflict(Gardner, 2015). The tensions began significantly on February 24, 2022, when Russia launched a large attack of Ukraine, following a Russian military deployment on the Russia-Ukraine border that began in late 2021. The Russian general"s main purpose was to overrun Ukraine and depose its government, ultimately putting an end to Ukraine"s desire to join NATO.

Russia and Ukraine had a history a thousand years old that both nations have muddled or shared. As per the Council on Foreign Relations, Ukraine was Europe"s source of sustenance in the twentieth century, among the most populated and wealthy nations in the former Soviet Union and a large agricultural importer. While Russia has consistently kept tabs on its western neighbor, Ukraine has experienced political chaos and fraud during its independence(Goshwami, 2022). Despite Ukraine"s intention to align itself more directly with Western nations, as well as a public interest in joining NATO, that was formed to counter Soviet influence, the council claims that Russia has responded with antagonism. Tempers flared after the Ukrainians deposed an anti-Russian head of state in 2014(KUZIO, 2020). Russia attacked Ukraine"s Crimea region under the false pretense of protecting ethnic Russians and Russian speaking Ukrainians, an act roundly condemned by the global community. At about the same time, Russia backed separatists in eastern Ukraine"s Donetsk and Luhansk regions, sparking a military confrontation. During a prolonged deadlock, both parties declared independence; in the 15 years since at least 14,000 people have died between the two nations in the dispute(Mirovalev, 2022) On February 24, he warned in a pre-dawn television address that Russia was constantly threatened by Ukraine, which he stated was a perpetual danger to Russia.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In global politics, geography plays an important role. This hypothesis is the logical foundation of geopolitics, an analytical model investigating states" political influence on territory in Darwinian competitive situations. The permanency of topography as a determinant of state action explains its significance. Monarchies, civilizations, nations, and governments come and go, but waterways, seas, ranges, grasslands, woodlands, and desserts are permanent(Ashworth, 2013). Not unexpectedly, Ukraine"s long history as a disputed battleground is not arbitrary. Because of its location as a geographical and strategical hallway connecting the European peninsula to the very core of the Eurasian â€â€"heartland," Ukraine is an area that Sir Halford Mackinder, one of the great scholars of conventional geopolitical thought, saw as crucial for dynastic endeavors of world dominance. A protective buffer state, a frontline for military amphibious operations, or a conduit for commercial transactions can all be represented by such a stance. As a result, it has always worked as a beacon, attracting the aspirations of invaders, czars, and soldiers. It is also worth battling for its agronomic competitiveness, accessible canals, warm-water ports, transportation infrastructure, demography, and mineral extraction reserves.

The study is considered one of the most important events at this time, and it diagnoses the reality of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, which has affected the world at the political and economic level. Ukraine is an important strategic center in the Black Sea region and Eastern Europe and possesses many natural resources, and its entry into NATO poses a great threat to Russian national security. There is no doubt that the intervention of many countries in the conflict aggravated the situation and reflected on the countries of the world, especially the European Union. The study presents the most important reasons that led to the Russian-Ukrainian war, the effects of this conflict, and the solutions that can end this crisis.
1.3 Objective of the Study
The objective of the study is to examine Russia-Ukraine conflict: causes and consequences from a narrative perspectives. The specific objectives is as follows:

Investigate the causes of the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Analyze the effects of the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Find proposed solutions to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

1.4 Research Questions
The following questions have been prepared for the study

What are the causes of the Russian-Ukrainian war?

What are the effects of the Russian-Ukrainian war?

What are the solutions to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict?

1.5 Significance of the Study
This study will be significant to the government, policy makers and the citizens, as they will be privy to the reason for the invasion of Ukraine by Russia and also learn from it. This study will be significant to the academic community and history student who may want to carry out a further research on the cause and effect of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The scope of this study borders on the assessment of Russia-Ukraine conflict. The study will further assess the the reasons for the Russian-Ukrainian war, and the effects of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
1.7 Limitation of the Study
This research project, like all human endeavors, had some challenges that threatened to derail the study"s completion. One of the reasons is that the time allotted for this work was so limited that the researcher did not have enough time to complete the task thoroughly. Insufficient funds tend to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing the relevant materials, literature, or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire, interview).
1.8 Research Methodology
Research methodology deals with the different ways or methods the researcher applied in order to carry out the research as well as the instrument used for gathering the data. There are several research methodologies appropriate for answering the research questions. The type of research methodology used in this research to gather data and relevant information is the historical research design. This study adopted and applied the qualitative analysis of documentary evidence which is the use of documentary or secondary method which entails the sourcing of data from materials as textbooks, journals, newspaper, magazines, internet sources, government publications among others related to the study area to enrich and help this work achieve it validity.
