The Aquatic Insects And Their Ecological Benefits Complete Project Material (PDF/DOC)
Aquatic insects play crucial roles in freshwater ecosystems, serving as indicators of environmental health and contributing to ecosystem functioning. In this study, we investigated the taxonomic composition, abundance patterns, and habitat preferences of aquatic insect communities in the freshwater ecosystems of Onitsha, Nigeria. Through comprehensive field surveys and laboratory analyses, we assessed the relationships between aquatic insect populations, water quality parameters, and habitat characteristics. Our findings reveal significant variability in aquatic insect abundance and community composition across sampling sites, with Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera, and Diptera emerging as dominant taxa. Correlation analyses indicate weak to moderate relationships between aquatic insect abundance and water quality parameters, highlighting the influence of environmental factors on insect community dynamics. Habitat assessments reveal preferences for high vegetation cover and stable substrate among key insect families, underscoring the importance of habitat quality for supporting biodiversity in urban freshwater environments. Based on our findings, we emphasize the need for integrated management approaches that address both ecological and socio-economic aspects of freshwater conservation. By implementing targeted conservation measures and promoting stakeholder engagement, we can enhance the resilience of freshwater ecosystems in Onitsha and similar urban environments, ensuring their continued provision of ecosystem services and benefits to local communities and biodiversity.
