Abstract

The study investigated the determinants of food consumption pattern among households in Akure, paying particular attention to income, price of food commodities, household size, education and tastes culture. The first aim is to find out how these socio-economic factors drive the behaviours that determine what food we eat. Data were collected across Akure from 120 households using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, Multiple regression analysis. Household size and education levels are shown to considerably influence the type of food they choose, where larger households are inclined to be more copious in their food consumption, and educated households being more careful with their food choices. Higher-income households consumed a greater diversity of food, suggesting that income levels directly impacted the variety and quality of diets. In contrast, lower-income households tended to choose cheaper, less healthy food. Food prices were highlighted as a key barrier, with increased prices causing households to limit their food options, sometimes reducing the nutritional value. Food consumption decisions were also affected by culture preferences and seasonal trends. Overall, the study found that food consumption patterns in Akure are influenced by a multifactorial combination of socio-economic factors. It suggests policy interventions to stabilize food prices and increase income support for low-income households and nutrition education, especially in poorer communities. The study recommends further research to examine regional differences and the long-term effects of these variables on food security and health outcomes. The findings have important implications for policymakers, public health practitioners, researchers interested on improving food security, nutrition and public health outcomes in Akure and similar settings.
