Effect Of Diarrhea Infection On The Health Of Children

Between 0-5 Years Of Age

Abstract

This study was carried out to examine the effect of diarrhoea infection on the health of children between 0-5 years of age using Ezeagu LGA, Enugu state as a case study. The study specifically was aimed to ascertain mothers knowledge on the prevalence of diarrhea infection on the health of children between 0-5 years of age, assess mothers knowledge on the causes of diarrhea infection on the health of children between 0-5 years of age, and assess mothers knowledge on the management of diarrhea infection among children between 0-5 years of age. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprised of mothers residing in Ezeagu LGA, Enugu state. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 160 respondents and 141 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables, and mean scores. While the hypotheses was tested Chi-square statistical tool. The result of the findings reveals that the prevalence of diarrhea infection on the health of children between 0-5 years of age is high. The study also revealed that the management of diarrhea infection among children between 0-5 years of age includes: rotavirus immunization, improved complementary feeding practices, promotion of exclusive breastfeeding, intake of oral rehydration solution (ORS). Therefore,  it is recommended that the health workers at the various MCH should strengthen their teachings on the management practices of mothers regarding childhood diarrhoea. Since these mothers varied in their responses in all the management practices. To mention but a few.

Aims and Objectives

The general objective of this study is to examine the effect of diarrhea infection on the health of children between 0-5 years of age. The specific objective is as follows:

  1. Ascertain mothers knowledge on the prevalence of diarrhea infection on the health of children between 0-5 years of age.
  2. Assess mothers knowledge on the causes of diarrhea infection on the health of children between 0-5 years of age.
  3. Assess mothers knowledge on the management of diarrhea infection among children between 0-5 years of age.

  2. What are the causes of diarrhea infection on the health of children between 0-5 years of age?

  1. 1 Introduction

This chapter presents the analysis of data derived through the questionnaire and key informant interview administered on the respondents in the study area. The analysis and interpretation were derived from the findings of the study. The data analysis depicts the simple frequency and percentage of the respondents as well as interpretation of the information gathered. A total of one hundred and forty-seven (147) questionnaires were administered to respondents of which only one hundred and forty-one (141) were returned and validated.
