Fabrication Of Metal Storage Rack

Overview

ABSTRACT

The main aim of the project is to fabricate a metal storage rack. Rack systems for Rack storage are important industrial structures by number and commercial value, yet they have been considered only recently in studies aiming at defining practical design rules for their safe use. These structures are always composed of metal elements. The fabrication of rack structures constitutes, indeed, an important application of cold-formed steel products. The need for continuously loading and unloading the shelves in service has induced designers to avoid bracing elements in the longitudinal direction of the racks. Therefore in many cases, lateral stability in this direction is ensured only by the connections between beam and column and by the constraint offered by the base of the columns. The main requirements for a finite element (FE) model of storage rack frames is to have the flexibility to represent the complex cross-section geometries of the members, and the ability to assign semi-rigid behavior to joints and to take into account the effect of local, distortion and flexural-torsional buckling in determining the ultimate capacity of the structure and optimization.

Keywords: Rack; finite element, metal storage rack column, lateral stability.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                                        INTRODUCTION

1.1                                           BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

A rack is a metal storage device that is usually made of a durable material. Racks, much like shelves have a wide array of shapes and sizes. Racks are of great use for storage and industrial purposes and are finding their place in the industrial world. Mentioned below are the different types of racks that are used in a wide variety of environments and situations (Abdel-Rahman et al., 2017).

Metal racks are one of the most common forms of racks found in the market today. These racks are durable, convenient and safe. They are perfect for heavy duty items owing to their solid build and durable coating.

Worldwide, metal or steel storage racks are used extensively in industry for storing goods on pallets. They are heavily loaded and resist significant forces; yet are designed to be as light as possible. Steel storage rack makes it possible for the user to easily have access to the stored steel.

Steel sections of this work have become usual in many kinds of structures, and consequently much research has been done to understand their behavior and to develop design procedures. Among these structures, there are the storage systems, usually called racks, widely used throughout the world for storing materials in distribution companies (Abdel-Rahman et al., 2017). These systems provide high storage density, allowing the storage of a great amount of products in reduced areas, due to their vertical character. Besides, they also allow great Accessibility to the stored materials. Many companies are using these systems to store their product in large scale.

1.2                                 PROBLEM STATEMENT

When metals make contact with liquid (water) it exposes such metal to rust. Rust alters the appearance of metal components. Rust replaces the sleek look of metal with a rougher, irregular surface. Rust also discolors the surface of metal objects. Rusted metal acquires a reddish or orange color. To overcome such problems a metal storage rack is fabricated. Thus, the development of this a metal storage rack provides better arrangement at the metal by store it at on place.

1.3                AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT

The main aim of this project is to design and fabricate a metal storage rack that is capable of containing different standard sizes of metal at minimum paces.

The objectives of this project are:

  1. To design metal storage rack that is suite to its application especially for loading metal (steel).
  2. To fabricate and introduce the new concepts and ideas for future prospect of metal storage rack.
  • To protect steels from lost and rust

1.4                                 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT

The construction of metal storage rack is easy in that it doesn’t involve much design during welding. Moreover, metal storage rack does not require a lot of maintenance, and can be easily kept clean and tidy. Even repairing a metal storage rack is much simple.

1.5                         LIMITATION OF THE PROJECT

Metal storage rack is known for being tough and heavy.  Because of how tough it is, you can often use less, partially negating the weight.  It can be a little harder to work with. It is more costly than other types of storage rack.

1.6                                 SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

In this work, valuable data are searched and gathered. Considering the shape of the a metal storage rack in terms of its complexity and method to produce.

Sketching and designing using Solid work software in creating the design of the a metal storage rack. Fabricate and produce the a metal storage rack by using all necessary manufacturing process such as welding, bending, punching, grinding, measuring, marking and painting.
