The aim of this project is to find out the factors responsible for the poor academic performance of students in Junior Secondary School of Edo State with particular reference to Egor Students. The methodology adopted by the researcher to accomplish this study are sample techniques and data collection through questionnaires, as well as personal interview of the student. Data was analyzed by means of simple frequencies and percentages.
The findings of the study discloses that; Non-challant attitude of the students affects their performance; Lack of quality teachers with negative attitude to work have a great effect on the poor academic performances of the students. Lack of instructional materials and teaching aid have effect on the academic performance of the students; Over population or an overcrowded classroom also contribute to students poor performance; Parent regular movement from one place to another have bearing with the poor academic performance of the students among other.
The study therefore recommends that the segment of the Nigerian Government responsible for regulating schools should ensure the employment of quality and qualified teachers should. More so should ensure adequate provision of teaching aids and other infrastructure need by secondary schools to enhance students academic performance.
To determine the adverse effects of poor academic performance on the attitudes of the students the research prompted the following research questions.
- Does the non-challant attitude of the students affect their performance?
- Does lack of quality teachers with negative attitude to work have any effect
- on the poor academic performances of the students?
- Does lack of instructional materials and teaching aid have any effect on the academic performance of the students?
- Does over population or an overcrowded classroom contribute to students poor performance?
- Does parent regular movement from one place to another have any bearing with the poor academic performance of the students?
SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS:
5.1 Introduction
This chapter summarizes the findings into the factors affecting the academic performance of junior secondary school students using two selected secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area Of Edo State as case study. The chapter consists of summary of the study, conclusions, and recommendations.
5.2 Summary of the Study
In this study, our focus was to examine the factors affecting the academic performance of junior secondary school students using two selected secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area Of Edo State as case study. The study specifically was aimed at determining the extent the junior secondary school students are aware of factors responsible for the poor academic performance of students and Inform and suggest possible recommendations to readdress these issues.
The study adopted the descriptive survey research design and randomly enrolled participants in the study. A total of 30 responses were validated from the enrolled participants where all respondents are active teachers of two selected secondary schools in Egor local Government area, Edo State.
5.3 Conclusions
Based on the findings of this study, the researcher made the following conclusion;
- Non-challant attitude of the students affects their performance.
- Lack of quality teachers with negative attitude to work have a great effect on the poor academic performances of the students.
- Lack of instructional materials and teaching aid have effect on the academic performance of the students.
- Over population or an overcrowded classroom also contribute to students poor performance.
- Parent regular movement from one place to another have bearing with the poor academic performance of the students.
5.4 RECOMMENDATIONS
- Parents and teachers should put in their best to change the mentality of students with non-challant attitudes, this will enable students of such behaviour to concentrate more to their studies.
- The segment of the Nigerian Government responsible for regulating schools should ensure the employment of quality and qualified teachers should. More so should ensure adequate provision of teaching aids and other infrastructure need by secondary schools to enhance students academic performance.
