Abstract

This research examined the impact of social media in local government administration in Nigeria with Oshogbo local government as a case study. The research method adopted for this research was survey in which one hundred and fifty questionnaires were administered to the respondents within Oshogbo local government secretariat and community while 130 copies of questionnaire were returned. Without doubt, social media have revolutionalized the practice and performance of Public relations at all level particularly with the recent introduction in the local government administration in Nigeria. However, despite the fact that social media have been in our society in about a decade it is yet to be fully appreciated and completely integrated as one of the core channels of information within the local government. It is recommended that if the Information Department of the local government is fully equipped with personnel and materials, it will go a long way in integrating social media into local government activities.

Aims and Objectives

The primary objective of this study is to analyse the impact of social media in local government administration in Nigeria. Specifically, other objectives of this study are:

  1. To know the impact of social media in the society.
  2. To examine if social media has helped Oshogbo Local government in building and maintaining a mutual understanding between the council top management and its various constituents.
  3. To find out whether social media has improved the service of information unit of Oshogbo local government.
  4. To examine various type of social media apps adopted by Oshogbo local government.
  5. To ascertain some of the challenges hindering effective use of social networking media in Osogbo local government as a public relations tool.

Research Questions

The following research questions will be answered by this study.

  1. What are the impact of social media in the society?
  2. Has social media helped Oshogbo Local government in building and maintaining a mutual understanding between the council top management and its various constituents?
  3. Has social media improved the service of information unit of Oshogbo local government?
  4. What are the various type of social media apps adopted by Oshogbo local government?
  5. What are some of the challenges hindering effective use of social networking media in Osogbo local government as a public relations tool?

5.0 SUMMARY CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

5.1 SUMMARY

This chapter of the study is set aside to determine summarized the descriptive analysis done in the precious chapters. It also gives the conclusion and makes some recommendation.

In the summary the purpose of this study was to examinethe impact of social media in local government administration in Nigeria. Specifically the study focused on  knowing the impact of social media in the society, examining if social media has helped Oshogbo Local government in building and maintaining a mutual understanding between the council top management and its various constituents, finding out whether social media has improved the service of information unit of Oshogbo local government, examining the various type of social media apps adopted by Oshogbo local government and,  ascertaining some of the challenges hindering effective use of social networking media in Osogbo local government as a public relations tool.

In order to carry out this study research questions formulated to guard the investigation.A total at 130 of Oshogbo Local Government Council were randomly selected as enrolled participants for the survey.The study was anchored on the Users and Gratification Theory.

5.2 CONCLUSION

In the conclusion the study is beyond doubt and abundantly clear that social media since its emergence, has now become a huge part of our lives. For governance to be effective and up to date, the use of social media has to be incorporated into its daily use and activities. From results obtained and analyzed, the study reveals that:

  • Some of the impact of social media in the society are that:
  1. It allows for sharing of critical information by the government during crises,
  2. It allows for easy communication,
  3. It helps to raise awareness on issues and
  4. Meeting of other people with similar interests
  • Social media has helped Oshogbo Local government in building and maintaining a mutual understanding between the council top management and its various constituents.
  • Social media improved the service of information unit of Oshogbo local government and
  • Some of the challenges hindering effective use of social networking media in Oshogbo local government as a public relations tool are:
  1. Ethical issues,
  2. Hacking and
  3. Breaching of privacy.

5.3 RECOMMENDATION

Recommendation on the basis of findings.The researcher made the following recommendation with the belief that when studied and applied, would help to increase the standard already at hand. The researcher recommends that:

  • The efficient use of social media in governance has proven to be effective. Hence, governments should adopt the use of social media in daily governance as the benefits outweigh the problems.
  • Governments should use social media as a tool to relate to their constituents and not as an oppression tool.
