Abstract

This study investigates the knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding vaginal hygiene among female students residing in hostels at Delta State University, Abraka. A cross-sectional survey design was employed, and data were collected using structured questionnaires administered to 100 participants. The study examines demographic factors, knowledge levels, attitudes, and self-reported hygiene behaviors to gain insights into the factors influencing vaginal hygiene practices among university students. The demographic analysis reveals a diverse sample population, encompassing various age groups, academic years, hostel accommodations, and fields of study. The majority of respondents reported a high frequency of vaginal cleansing and expressed positive attitudes toward the importance of maintaining good vaginal hygiene. However, variations in knowledge levels and practices were observed across different demographic groups, highlighting the need for targeted interventions to address knowledge gaps and promote optimal hygiene behaviors. Findings suggest a significant association between demographic factors and knowledge regarding vaginal hygiene. Factors such as age, academic year, hostel accommodation, and field of study influence awareness and understanding of vaginal hygiene practices. While overall attitudes toward vaginal hygiene are positive, there is room for improvement in knowledge dissemination and hygiene education among university students. Based on the findings, recommendations are proposed to enhance vaginal hygiene awareness and promote positive hygiene behaviors among female students. These recommendations include implementing health education programs, collaborating with healthcare providers, integrating reproductive health topics into the university curriculum, establishing peer education initiatives, and conducting further research to explore additional factors influencing knowledge and practices regarding vaginal hygiene. By implementing these recommendations, stakeholders can work together to improve reproductive health outcomes and overall well-being among female students residing in hostels at Delta State University, Abraka. This study contributes to the body of knowledge on vaginal hygiene practices among university students and provides valuable insights for developing targeted interventions to address knowledge gaps and promote optimal hygiene behaviors in this population.
