Modification Of A Semi-Automated Aluminum Can Crusher

The Modification Of A Semi-Automated Aluminum Can Crusher (PDF/DOC)

Overview

ABSTRACT

The main aim of this project is to fabricate a semi-automated Can Crusher machine to reduce the scrap volume and use the Cans so that carrying them to the recycle site becomes easy. Now-a- days, a large number of cans are used in hotels, canteens etc. and a large volume of space is required for storing or dumping the used Cans. This project includes fabrication of a Can Crusher using single slider crank mechanism which will reduce the volume of cans at least 70%. This report demonstrates the necessary modification, calculation, assembling and fabrication of the machine.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                              INTRODUCTION

1.1                                BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Aluminium doesn’t occur naturally in the earth’s crust, it has to be extracted from its ore-bauxite which is mined and then smelted in a very energy-intensive process. Although great care is taken to rebuild the land after mining, changes do occur as a result of mining that are detrimental to the surrounding environment. It takes 80-100 years for aluminium can to decompose. Compared to mining and smelting, recycling aluminium drink cans is far less energy intensive. Recycling aluminium requires only 5% of the energy and produces only 5% of the CO2 emissions as compared with primary production. Aluminium cans are one of the easiest materials to recycle. New drinks cans appear on the shelf just six weeks after recycling. A single aluminium can is said to, when recycled, saves about as much as oil as would be poured into it to fill up.

Can Crushers are used in mechanical and allied industries which crush cans made of different materials. The Can Crusher machine is widely used in beverage industries or in scrap dealers’ shop to reduce the volume of the cans. Consequently, it leads to the reduction of the transportation cost. This machine is primarily used to save space and for recycling. It can be placed anywhere. In today’s life most of the food items are packed in cans like cold and warm drinks and other beverages. Commercial establishments like cafeteria and bars, have to deal with leftover cans. Storage of these cans is often a problem and these increases total volume of the trash. Therefore, using can crusher in such places proves to be advantageous.

In this project, we have developed a semi-automated Can Crusher that can crush the tin as flat and as symmetrically as possible before landing into the bin. The design is environment friendly and uses simple mechanism. [6]

1.2          PROBLEM STATEMENT

It has been observed that tin cans constitute significant part of garbage at public places. In order to recycle and process these cans their collection and transportation is necessary. This work is on fabrication of a modified tin can crusher. Tin can crusher helps to achieve volume reduction and reduces transportation costs. It will help to keep earth neat and clean as the model eco-friendly

1.3        AIM AND OBJECTIVE

The main aim of a can crusher is to smash an empty aluminium can into the smallest unit possible. The main objectives of the project are:

  1. To fabricate a simple and easy to use semi-automated Can Crusher machine involving low cost of construction and easily movable from one place to another.
  2. To reduce the volume of the cans at least 70%.

iii. To modified a single slider crank aluminium can crusher.

1.4          APPLICATION OF THE PROJECT

This machine can be very helpful in places such as:

  1. Canteens,
  2. restaurants,
  • bars,
  1. catering halls,
  2. cinema halls and
  3. Recycling plants are places where a can crusher is pretty much a must.

1.5          LIMITATION/PROBLEM OF THE PROJECT

The semi-automated Can Crusher models of the research papers the crushed cans need to be removed manually and also new cans need to be placed every time.

1.6        ADVANTAGES OF THE STUDY

Can crusher are the most efficient, convenient, space saving and easy way to reduce your aluminium waste while fulfilling recycling duty. They are convenient, easy to use and environmental friendly.

   1.7                   SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Construction of industrial saw compartment has played a significance role to mankind and industries. The construction of this work helps to carry out effective separation without many problems. It reduces the physical effort required by operators; free him from tediously repeated work.

1.7          SCOPE OF THE WORK

It was observed that there is a need for the aluminium can crusher to be lighter in weight, safe, efficient and stable. Apart from providing stability, the crusher was required to be transported from place to place. Also, easy handling was another important criteria observed. Therefore the following were the objectives of this work:

  1. It should be non-hazardous to
  2. It should crush large number of cans in a less
  3. It should reduce the labour

It should be compact and should not make use of any complex mechanisms

1.8  METHOD OF RESEARCH

The research was done by sourcing information from the library, internet textbooks and from previous or related subject’s projects. Empirical research was also conducted by performing a standard construction of a saw compartment in the workshop. The apparatus for the construction was set up and carried out with all the precautions strictly adhered to.
