Smartphones As Tools For News Gathering Among Journalists

In Minna, Niger State

Abstract

This study examines the use of smartphones as tools for news gathering among journalists in Minna, Niger State. It is crucial because, despite the significant potential of new media technologies to enhance journalism, many media organizations in the region still lag behind. The research employed a survey method, using a convenience sampling technique to distribute 186 questionnaires across three media organizations in Minna. Analysis of the responses revealed that most journalists in Minna believe new technologies have enhanced the quality of media production. Although many journalists recognize the importance of these technologies, a considerable number of media organizations do not provide specialized training for staff on their use. The study therefore recommends that media managers implement regular training programs for journalists to effectively utilize smartphones and other new media technologies in news gathering.
