Abstract

One company (ANAMMCO Plc., Enugu) was used in this empirical work o determine the attitude of top management towards public relations function.

Four research objectives and three hypothesis formed the basis of this work. and the library research and sample survey methods of research were used in this study. Among nine(9) questionnaires sent out, they were all duly completed and returned.

The textual, tabular and simple percentage modes of presentation were use in analyzing, presenting and interpreting the gathered data.

It was found out that Pubic Relations Officers are partially involved in policy and decision making of the company. It was also observed that top management in the organization places Public Relations functions on the middle management level. The study also revealed that Public Relations professional are employed to man their Public Relations Department. The study further showed that Public Relations Officers are not placed on the same pedestal with other principal departments.

It is based on these observations that the researcher recommended that top managements in the organization should endeavour to place Public Relations function at the top management level as well as include Public Relations Officers in policy and decision making.

5.1 Summary

The study examined the attitude of top management towards Public Relations function in ANAMCO. Heads of the different departments in the organization were studies in their real life situation to find out their attitudes towards Public Relations function.

Three hypotheses were formulated and tested for the purpose of this study. The empirical study revealed that the organization studied has a well laid departmental structure for the Public Relations functions and is headed by a Public Relations Professional.

The study also shows that Public Relations functions are highly relevant to the work of the organization studied. Despite this, the answer to hypothesis one shows that Public Relations functions are not regarded as a top management function.

The study also revealed that decisions on matters relating to Public Relations in ANAMCO PLC. Are taken by both Public Relations Officers and management.

The study further revealed that the organization"s Public Relations officers are on lower cadre/pedestal with the heads of other principal departments.

The implementation of this result is that Public Relations functions is not fully part of the management function and Public Relations Officers are not fully part of the management team as they are supposed to be.

5.2 Recommendations

In as much as the researcher does not make any of absoluteness in the findings of this study, the intention is that at least it will contribute to knowledge in this field of study. Based on this submission therefore, the researcher wishes to make the following recommendations.

5.3 Policy Recommendations

Chief executives of organizations should change their attitude towards Public Relations functions and be prepared to accord the practitioners their rightful places (managerial position) for effectiveness.

The Public Relations Managers in organizations should brace up to the challenges of their jobs since how they are regarded depends on how much they are seen to be contributing to the overall achievement of the organizations" objectives.

Institution of higher learning should salvage situation by organizing programmes for Public Relations managers, which should be aimed at educating them or management principles and how to assess themselves in their various organizations for the need and place of Public Relations in today"s business.

 

5.4 Recommendation for Further Studies

This study is limited to one company. Further studies should sample more companies in order to obtain a more comprehensive and embracing result.

Such studies should delve into the areas like government Public Relations and how effectively it could be used for government functions.

Equally, such research endeavours should examine how fare Public Relations has achieved its objectives by examining the correlation between the place of Public Relations in an organization and effective performance.

Such studies should attempt a comparison of the effectiveness of organizational Public Relations and government Public Relations and how organizational structures affect their functions.
