The Design And Construction Of A Vehicle Speed Detector Using IR Sensor And Arduino (PDF/DOC)
ABSTRACT
The main aim of this work is to build a speed detection system for vehicle on the highway road. An accident occurs due to rash driving on highways is on the rise and people are losing their lives because of others mistakes. It is necessary to solve these kinds of problems through electronics circuit. This work describes the over speed for vehicles. This system will come handy for highway traffic police as it will not only provide a digital display in accordance with a vehicle’s speed but also sounds an alarm if the vehicle exceeds the limit speed for the highway.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Growth in population has led to the growth in technology. People uses car on large number and number of accidents taking place, is increasing day-by-day. Road accidents are certainly the most frequent happening cases and overall, the cause of the most damage. Most of accidents on the highway road are caused by the high speed driving. Over speeding is a threat to the lives of the people as it can take the life of the driver, people sitting in the vehicle or people on the roads. Therefore there must be strict rules and regulations for driving the vehicle at certain speed limits on certain roads. The vehicles should keep a constant speed within the speed limit over a particular area.
In this paper, we intend to design a system aimed at early detection and alert of dangerous vehicles driving patterns which reduces the accident. This system provides very effective detection of over speed driving. This circuit is mainly consisting of Arduino UNO, two IR sensors, 16×2 LCD and buzzer. Two IR sensors are kept apart on one side of road. When any vehicles cross the sensors, the internal timer in Arduino counts the time between activation of sensor. Now speed is measured by using simple formula of distance time relationship. If the Vehicle’s speed indicates over speeding condition i.e. 50 km/h, the buzzer will be triggered. Then, LCD displays the speed of vehicles. This system is to develop a device that detects over speeding of vehicles, gives warning using alarm and display vehicle’s speed in LCD.
1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT
Over-speeding is one of the major factors of all fatal motor vehicle crashes and accident, and this led government to setup rules for speeding. There are definite rules laid out by authorities about driving cars on roads. The most common rule in any country is speed limit in certain roads i.e. you will be in violation of the law if your car speed exceeds this limit.
In developed countries, in order to detect the speed of a moving car, the patrolling officers usually depend on a handheld gun that works on Radar Technology or Lidar Technology. This is a tedious process as the officer has to manually check for over speeding for each vehicle.
What if the Car Speed Detection is made automatic? A simple automatic detection of speed of a vehicle is designed in Arduino Car Speed Detector project, where you can place the system in one place and view the results instantly without any human intervention.
1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The main aim of this work is to build a car speed detecting and alarm system using arduino and IR sensor.
The objectives of the system are:
- To build a car speed detector and alarm system model/prototype
- To monitor and display the speed of a vehicle thereby reducing road accidents.
- To call the attention of a driver when over-speeding
1.4 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope of this study covers the building of a speed detection which is used to detect the speed of the running vehicle. This system is designed to reduce the road accidents in the development of the vehicle speed detector system by using an IR sensor, 16x2LCD, buzzer, LED and Arduino UNO.
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This project will help you to detect the speed of a moving car easily without any human intervention by simply placing it somewhere on the road.
Carrying out this work will go a long way helping the student involved to become familiar with integration of arduino with IR sensor.
To the government authority, this study will serve as a means of ensuring that road users will not exceed speed limit which involves little or no stress.
1.6 APPLICATION OF THE PROJECT
This project can be used by drivers to ensure that they maintained a certain safe speed limit. It can be used by government authorities that ensure safer road usage such as Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and vehicle inspection officers (VIO) etc.
This project can also be used as traffic logger, traffic counter and few other traffic related applications.
1.7 PROJECT ORGANISATION
The work is organized as follows: chapter one discuses the introductory part of the work, chapter two presents the literature review of the study, chapter three describes the methods applied, chapter four discusses the results of the work, chapter five summarizes the research outcomes and the recommendations.
