Abstract
This study investigates the impact of guidance and counseling on students’ academic performance in Igueben Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey design, using a structured questionnaire administered to a sample of 50 respondents drawn from selected schools within the area. The objectives of the study were to determine the influence of guidance and counselling services on students’ academic achievement, examine the role of counsellors in addressing students’ personal and academic challenges, and assess students’ perceptions of counselling services in their schools. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and results indicated that guidance and counselling services significantly contribute to improved academic performance, better study habits, and enhanced personal development. The study recommends increased investment in school counselling units, regular training for counsellors, and greater awareness campaigns to promote the utilization of counselling services among students.
Chapter One
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Education is widely recognized as a fundamental instrument for national development, and its quality is often reflected in the academic performance of students. In contemporary times, the growing complexity of social, emotional, and academic demands placed on students has made it increasingly necessary to provide structured support systems in schools. Guidance and counseling services have emerged as key interventions aimed at fostering the holistic development of students, equipping them with essential life skills, and improving their academician outcomes.
Guidance and counseling, as formalized school services, are designed to assist students in understanding themselves, making informed decisions, and adapting to changing life circumstances. According to Okobiah and Okorodudu (2004), guidance involves a range of processes designed to help individuals discover and develop their potential, while counseling is a more personalized interaction between the counselors and the client aimed at addressing personal, social, and academic concerns.
In Nigeria, the implementation of guidance and counseling services in schools has been supported by various government policies, including the National Policy on Education (Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2013), which emphasizes the role of counselors in promoting the educational, vocational, and personal-social development of students. However, the extent to which these services are effectively implemented and utilized varies significantly across regions and schools.
This study focuses on Igueben Local Government Area of Edo State, where anecdotal evidence suggests that while some schools have established guidance and counseling units, others lack fully functional services. The study seeks to examine the impact of guidance and counseling on students’ academic performance, exploring whether such interventions contribute to improved achievement, better behaviour, and enhanced decision-making among secondary school students.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In many Nigerian secondary schools, students face a multitude of challenges ranging from poor study habits, examination anxiety, peer pressure, and lack of career direction to personal issues such as family instability. These factors often combine to negatively affect academic performance.
Despite the acknowledged importance of guidance and counseling, the reality on the ground in some schools, particularly in Igueben Local Government Area, suggests that the services are either underutilized or inadequately provided. Some schools operate without trained counselors, while others have counselors who are overburdened with teaching responsibilities, thereby reducing the quality and accessibility of counseling services.
Consequently, the pressing problem that this study addresses is whether guidance and counseling services, as currently practiced in the area, have a measurable and positive impact on students’ academic performance. This investigation is crucial because it may inform policy, guide school administration, and improve the quality of educational outcomes.
Despite policies mandating guidance and counseling in Nigerian schools, many schools have insufficient or under‐resourced guidance and counseling units. In Igueben LGA, anecdotal evidence suggests that students who receive little or no counseling face issues such as poor study habits, lack of motivation, personal/social problems, which may negatively affect their academic performance. However, empirical data on the degree of these effects is lacking.
Some specific problems include:
Students with personal or social problems dropping in grades
Indiscipline, absenteeism, affecting academic results
Guidance counsellors being few, untrained or overloaded
Lack of awareness among students/parents of counseling services
This study seeks to fill the gap by measuring the effect of guidance and counseling on academic performance, using Igueben LGA as case study.
