Abstract

This study aimed to assess the availability and utilization of learning resources for teaching basic science and technology in primary schools, focusing on selected schools in Ikono Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. Specifically, it sought to determine the adequacy of available learning resources, evaluate teachers’ utilization of these resources, assess the impact of adequate availability and utilization on effective teaching, and investigate factors influencing resource availability and utilization. The survey design was adopted, employing simple random sampling to select 41 respondents from the population of teachers in the area, with 35 validated responses. Data was collected using a self-constructed and validated questionnaire, analyzed through frequency tables and mean scores, and hypotheses were tested using the Chi-square statistical tool. Results indicated inadequate availability of necessary learning resources in Ikono Local Government Area primary schools, while also highlighting the significant positive impact of sufficient resource availability and utilization on effective teaching. Recommendations include increased federal funding to support state and local educational initiatives and the modernization of learning facilities, among other measures aimed at enhancing educational outcomes in the region
