CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION
Every year, the final year student of this institution in Higher National Diploma (HND) and the National Diploma (ND) into practice.
This is aimed at justifying the emphasis lead on practical work during the course of study in the assigned to construct a grain-grinding machine by the machine committee of Mechanical Engineering Department, the Polytechnic, Enugu.
A grain grinding machine is an equipment used for grinding maize, beans, melon, millet and such other good crops. This equipment comprises essentially of an electric motor, belt, pulley, transmission shaft, hopper, mills, spiral conveyor and stands. These alleviate the rigours and problems house we encounter when grinding beans for the good stuff.

1.1 RESEARCH PROBLEMS
The project research problem are:
i. To construct a local fabricated grain grinding machine using available local technology.
ii. To construct a machine with a size specification.
iii. To construct a machine which can perform a domestic operations.
iv. To construct a machine which have adequate capacity, lighter in weight, lesser fatigue and portable.

1.2 JUSTIFICATION OF STUDY
i. This is to promote indigenous machine and their producers.
ii. To have a portable grain grinding machine constructed for domestic uses with a powered driven source.
iii. To improve the economic and the country as a whole by neglecting imported blenders i.e producing machine that is affordable to substitute the imported blenders.
iv. To be able to meet National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) requirement in awarding National Diploma (ND) in Mechanical Engineering.

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The objectives of the study are:-
i. To construct grain grinding machine with local materials.
ii. To construct a machine which is less in crop and domestic usage.
iii. To produce a grain grinding machine that is lesser in vibration, weight and in size.

1.4 SCOPE AND LIMITATION
The following are the scope and limitation of the project:
To construct a machine that can perform domestic grinding of food condiments.
It can perform any operation that the electrical blender can perform due to its electrically powered.

MORE DESCRIPTION:

Construction Of Grain Grinding Machine:

Constructing a grain grinding machine involves several steps and requires various materials and tools. The following is a basic outline of how you can build a simple grain grinding machine. Please note that this is a simplified design, and you may need to make adjustments based on your specific requirements and available resources.

Materials and Tools Needed:

Materials:

  1. Base frame (wood or metal)
  2. Motor (electric or manual)
  3. Pulleys and belts (if using an electric motor)
  4. Grinding chamber (metal or plastic)
  5. Hopper for grain input
  6. Grinding plates or stones
  7. Bearings
  8. Bolts, nuts, and washers
  9. Safety guards
  10. Electrical components (if using an electric motor)
  11. Grain to grind

Tools:

  1. Measuring tape
  2. Saw
  3. Drill
  4. Wrenches
  5. Screwdriver
  6. Welding equipment (if using a metal frame)
  7. Safety gear (goggles, gloves, etc.)

Steps to Construct a Grain Grinding Machine:

  1. Design and Plan:
    • Start by designing the machine on paper, including the dimensions and specifications you need. This will serve as your guide throughout the construction process.
  2. Build the Base Frame:
    • Construct the base frame using wood or metal. The base should be sturdy and stable to support the entire machine.
  3. Install the Motor:
    • If using an electric motor, attach it securely to the base frame. Ensure the motor’s power rating is suitable for your grain grinding needs.
  4. Install the Grinding Chamber:
    • Attach the grinding chamber to the base frame. This chamber should house the grinding plates or stones.
  5. Mount the Hopper:
    • Install the hopper at the top of the grinding chamber. This is where you will pour the grains for grinding.
  6. Install Bearings:
    • Attach bearings to the shaft of the motor and the grinding plates or stones. Bearings help reduce friction and ensure smooth operation.
  7. Attach Grinding Plates or Stones:
    • Install the grinding plates or stones inside the grinding chamber. These components will crush and grind the grains.
  8. Set Up the Belt and Pulley System (if applicable):
    • If you’re using an electric motor, set up the belt and pulley system to transfer power from the motor to the grinding chamber. Proper alignment is crucial for efficient operation.
  9. Safety Measures:
    • Install safety guards around moving parts to prevent accidents. Ensure that the machine’s design incorporates safety features to protect users.
  10. Electrical Wiring (if using an electric motor):
    • If using an electric motor, wire it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Make sure to include an on/off switch and safety features like overload protection.
  11. Testing:
    • Before using the machine for grinding, perform a thorough test to ensure everything is functioning correctly. Check for any unusual noises or vibrations.
  12. Operational Maintenance:
    • Regularly inspect and maintain the machine to ensure it operates smoothly. Lubricate moving parts, replace worn-out components, and clean the grinding plates or stones as needed.

Please note that this is a simplified guide, and the complexity of your grain grinding machine may vary depending on your specific requirements and resources. Always prioritize safety when building and operating machinery, especially if it involves electrical components or rotating parts. If you’re not experienced in machine construction, it’s advisable to seek guidance or assistance from a knowledgeable individual or professional.
