ABSTRACT
This project is titled design and construction of numeric keypad lock. It is design to meet up with the security demand of properties against theft.
Numeric keypad lock is an electronic locking device which operates by means of electric current. Electric locks are sometimes stand-alone with an electronic control assembly mounted directly to the lock. More often electric locks are connected to an access control system. The advantages of an electric lock connected to an access control system include: key control, where keys can be added and removed without re-keying the lock cylinder; fine access control, where time and place are factors; and transaction logging, where activity is recorded.
Perhaps the most prevalent form of electronic lock is that using a numerical code for authentication; the correct code must be entered in order for the lock to deactivate. Such locks typically provide a keypad, and some feature an audible response to each press. Combination lengths are usually between 4 and 6 digits long.
Numeric keypad lock is designed to activate or open a circuit a system when the right code is entered and to remain dormant when the wrong code is pressed once or two times, but when it is pressed for the third time it beeps indicating an unauthorized user. The system makes use of 12V supply and NAND-gate integrated circuits.

CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Traditional lock systems using mechanical lock and key mechanism are being replaced by new advanced techniques of locking system. These techniques are an integration of mechanical and electronic devices and highly intelligent. One of the prominent features of these innovative lock systems is their simplicity and high efficiency. Such an automatic lock system consists of electronic control assembly which controls the output load through a password. This output load can be a motor or a lamp or any other mechanical/electrical load. Here we develop an electronic code lock system using 4081 IC, which provides control to the actuating the load. It is a system with input from the keyboard and the output being actuated accordingly. This system demonstrates a password based door lock system wherein once the correct code or password is entered, the door is opened and the concerned person is allowed access to the secured area. Again if another person arrives it will ask to enter the password. If the password is wrong then door would remain closed, denying the access to the person.
1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT
One could attest to the fact that the metallic keys used to access mechanical door locks are very susceptible to getting lost, which would mean breaking the locks over and over again if there are more occurrences of such scenarios, moreover, such access keys can be duplicated by unauthorized users.
Using an electronic door lock as said earlier would counteract the damning consequences of such repugnant occurrences. This study came to overcome these challenges by using a password / numerals instead of traditional lock.
1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT
The main aim of this work is to design a security door device that can be used to control a door when the right password is pressed using a keypad. The objectives are to:
- Eliminate the use of mechanical/metallic keys
- Prevent events of key
- Avoid excessive key duplication for everyone in the
- Make the apartment where it is installed more difficult to break
1.4 ADVANTAGES OF NUMERIC DOOR LOCK SYSTEM
- This project provides security
- Power consumption is less
- Used commonly available components
- Project is simple and easy
1.5 APPLICATIONS OF THE PROJECT
- This simple circuit can be used at residential places to ensure better safety.
- It can be used at organizations to ensure authorized access to highly secured places.
- With a slight modification this Project can be used to control the switching of loads through password.
1.6 LIMITATION OF THE PROJECT
Limitations of numeric Door Lock System are:
- It is a low range circuit, i.e. it is not possible to operate the circuit remotely.
- If you forget the password it is not possible to open the door.
1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS
Secure Area: A designated area in which access into and out of is controlled and can be monitored.
Secure Door: A door in which access through is controlled and can be monitored.
Shielding: Providing electrical isolation for a circuit, component, or wire by enclosing or isolating the circuit, component, or wire with a metal enclosure, plate, or foil that blocks any interfering electrical field.
Short Circuit: An unintentional connection that provides a low resistance path between two points in a circuit or between a point in a circuit and ground. A Short Circuit can drastically affect the operation of a circuit. If excessive current flow results from the Short Circuit, a device may be damaged or ruined.
Spike: A voltage peak of high amplitude and short duration.
Suppression: The addition of a device to an electrical circuit that minimizes or prevents transients from affecting the proper operation of that circuit.
Switch: A device used to either connect or interrupt an electronic circuit.
1.8 PROJECT WORK ORGANISATION
The various stages involved in the development of this project have been properly put into five chapters to enhance comprehensive and concise reading. In this project thesis, the project is organized sequentially as follows:
Chapter one of this work is on the introduction to the study. In this chapter, the background, significance, objective limitation and problem of system were discussed.
Chapter two is on literature review of the study. In this chapter, all the literature pertaining to this work was reviewed.
Chapter three is on design methodology. In this chapter all the method involved during the design and construction were discussed.
Chapter four is on testing analysis. All testing that result accurate functionality was analyzed.
Chapter five is on conclusion, recommendation and references.
