CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Alternative types of energy are receiving a lot of attention in today’s environmentally conscious world. A sustainable energy source that has grown in popularity in recent years is solar power. Today, fossil fuels account for 80% of the energy we use, with solar energy making up the remaining 1%. The world’s oil supplies are predicted to last for several more years, whereas solar energy is endless(Ashlesh, 2014). Over energy sources, solar energy offers two significant advantages. The first is that it will never run out since it is renewable. And its impact on the environment is the second. Solar panels are used to produce solar energy; unlike wind turbines, which need large mechanical components, solar panels do not. These mechanical components might malfunction, lead to maintenance problems, and even make a lot of noise. With solar panels, both of these problems are almost non-existent.

We set out to develop a limited, small-scale electrical generator that could be utilized to power consumer gadgets in light of the present energy crisis and the growing demand for sustainable energy. Due to its low environmental impact and lack of emissions, solar energy has shown its value as an alternative energy source. It has been used successfully for power grids that contain vast solar concentrator fields of vast tracts. Photovoltaic (PV) panels have been utilized to capture solar energy on a modest scale, and they have been used to power everything from a small phone to a residential building.

The words “photovoltaic” and “voltaic,” which together translate to “light” and “electricity,” respectively, are derived from the Italian physicist “VOLTA,” after whom the volt, a measure of electromotive force, is named. The sun, a hydrogen and helium-filled star, emits a tremendous quantity of energy every second. A photovoltaic cell is a type of electrical appliance that uses the photovoltaic effect to convert light energy directly into electricity.

A solar-powered cell phone charging system is a type of power electronic device that transforms solar energy into electrical energy for the purpose of recharging mobile phone batteries. It accomplishes this by converting, regulating, and conditioning the electrical energy flow from the solar panel to the mobile phone in accordance with the demands of the load.

Solar phone chargers are available in a variety of forms, including folding and rotating models. They can also be found as straps that have a nickel metal hydride battery inside and solar cells on the outside. After hours of exposure to the sun, they can fully charge a mobile device, giving it some minutes of conversation time.

Even though there have been numerous projects on this subject, the crucial problem of portability remains unresolved. Our project’s goal is to make it simple to move the device from one place to another without it feeling overly hefty. In addition, to add a wireless connectivity so that you can charge your device without having to worry about managing cables.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

According to the International Energy Agency, in 2011 1.4 billion people around the world did not have access to electricity. And most users of mobile phones find difficulty in charging their mobile phones. We want to use this project to overcome the problem by creating a means to charge mobile phones using solar energy.

The system consists of 5V, 5W solar panel, Lithium ion batteries – two units of 2500mAh, Boost converter, 5V, 2A Wireless charger transmitter, LEDs.

The major factor that drove us to this project is that it is one of the method of charging that utilizes the renewable sources of energy where we can overcome the exhaustible usage of power and charge. It reduces the environmental pollution and is much user friendly. During disasters and power outrages, it can be used with ease and with a long and forever durability of device and power. Even in the remote areas having scarcity of electricity, such models can be used.

1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The aim of this project is to solve the issues and design and implement a wireless phone charging system.

The objectives of the project are as follows:

  1. To create a product that offers you a portable, personal charging solution and aids in maintaining mobile phone service.
  2. To build a project-appropriate encasement that is properly packaged.

iii. To ensure the device has a wireless charging connection.

  1. To position the component and assemble it in accordance with the circuit design.
  2. To analyze and test the developed device’s performance.

1.4 METHODOLOGY OVERVIEW

To achieve the aim and objective of this work, the following methods are involved:

  1. Study of previous work on the project so as to improve its efficiency.
  2. Draw a block diagram.

iii. Test for continuity of components and devices.

  1. Studying of various components used in the circuit
  2. Construction of the system circuit.
  3. Finally, the whole device would be cased and final test would be carried out.

The conversion of solar energy into electrical energy is the project’s main principle. We are utilizing a 5V 5W solar panel to achieve this. Additionally, we must take into account the voltage and current that the load will consume while determining the voltage and current rating of our panels. The boost converter is used to increase the variable DC voltage from solar panels to a greater, steady voltage. a wireless transmitter for the device’s wireless charging. Additionally, there are two Lithium-ion batteries for power storage when the sun is not visible.

1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

A good use for a wireless solar charging system is to give you a choice for charging your phone whether you’re in a distant location or just don’t have access to an electrical outlet. In an emergency, cell phones can literally save lives. Over the past few years, people have significantly come to rely on this technology. To operate at their best, these need batteries that are completely charged. When there is no nearby power source, solar chargers are fantastic. These chargers also have the advantage of being cost-free to use because they harness solar energy. Even when the backup battery is not actively charging, it still stores energy.

1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Over the forecast period, demand for environmentally friendly products like portable solar chargers is anticipated to increase due to rising adoption of environmentally friendly products, particularly in developed nations like the United States and Germany due to growing awareness regarding the depletion of energy resources. Over the projected period, there are likely to be huge potential for portable solar chargers due to the rising use of smart phones, tablets, and other portable electronic devices as well as a shift in customer preferences toward sustainable energy sources.

Growing interest in outdoor pursuits including hiking, cross-country running, and camping as a result of increased awareness of the need of leading a healthy lifestyle is anticipated to fuel the expansion of the portable solar charger market.

The primary benefit of the solar-powered cell phone charging system is the significant electrical energy saving. Through a variety of interactions, the solar panels will assist in turning solar energy from the sun into electrical energy.
