The Effect And Use Of Internet Facilities On Acquisition Of Information Resources In Academic Library (PDF/DOC)
This study examines the effect and use of internet facilities on the acquisition of information resources in the academic library, using the University of Uyo as a case study. The research focuses on four key objectives: identifying the types of internet resources available in the library, determining students’ awareness of these resources, evaluating the extent of usage by undergraduate students, and identifying challenges hindering the effective use of internet resources. A sample size of 100 undergraduate students from the Library and Information Science Department was used. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.
The findings reveal that a variety of internet resources, such as library websites (96.6%), online databases (80.2%), and computers (85.2%), are available in the University of Uyo library. However, awareness of these resources is moderate, with library websites being the most commonly used (73.2%), followed by online databases (68.6%). Despite the availability of resources, challenges such as insufficient computers (59.3%) and slow internet connectivity (69.3%) hinder optimal use. The study concludes that internet resources have a significant effect on the acquisition of information resources in the academic library, with a 94% decisive influence (R² = 0.936, p < 0.05).
Based on these findings, the study recommends increasing access to computers, improving internet connectivity, and providing more training to enhance students’ skills in accessing internet resources. Suggestions for further research include investigating the impact of mobile device integration on resource utilization and comparing internet resource usage in urban and rural university libraries.
The main objective of this study is assess the effect and use of internet on acquisition of information resources in academics library. The specific research objectives are stated below:
- To identify what types of Internet resources are provided in the libraries
- To determine if information seekers are aware of the existence of `Internet resources in the institutions libraries.
- To determine the extent of use of these resources by Undergraduate students .
- To find out those factors that hinders the use of Internet resources and services in the department of library and information science.
The study has the following research questions:
- What types of Internet resources are available in the University libraries?
- How are the Internet information resources accessed by the undergraduate students ?
- To what extent are the Internet resources used by undergraduate students ?
- What are the challenges faced in using of the Internet resources by the undergraduate student?
The following null hypothesis is tested at 0.05 level of significance and guided the study.
Ho: Internet resources have no significant effect on Acquisition Of Information Resources In Academic Library in University of Uyo.
H1: Internet resources have a significant effect on Acquisition Of Information Resources In Academic Library in university of uyo.
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
5.1 Introduction
This chapter presents summaries of the findings. It also contains the conclusion that was drawn and recommendations that were made on how to improve in assessing the use of Internet resources
5.2 Summary of Findings
- The findings based on research question one reveals that, there are different Internet resources available in University of uyo libraries which show most of the Internet resources listed in the options are available in the library, and library website, computer, online database, CD-ROMs and internet are available in University of uyo libraries.
- The research question two also reveals that, the library computers are the major ways to access Internet information resources and also the techniques used in acquiring the skills to access Internet are through courses offered in University of uyo.
- The extent of using Internet information resources in University of uyo libraries by undergraduate students of library science reveals that library website, online database and computers compare to others Internet resources and also there is adequate use of Internet as information resources in University of uyo by library science department
- It can be said that the challenges students faced when using Internet information resources by undergraduate students of library science are insufficient computer and slow internet connectivity among others.
5.3 Conclusion
It could be concluded from the findings of this study that there are different type of Internet resources available in University of uyo libraries which include library website, computer, online database, CD-ROMs and internet. Only fax mail that is not available and it may be due to lack of awareness like other Internet resources. Library website is the major ways to access Internet information resources in University of uyo libraries and also, personal handheld devices are list used to access Internet information resources. However, the techniques used to acquire the skills in accessing Internet resources in University of uyo libraries by undergraduate students of library science is through courses offered at the university. Library websites, online databases, and computers are mostly used by student of library science at University of uyo libraries because despite the many Internet information resources found in University of uyo libraries, to access Internet information and finally, slow internet connectivity with frequency of 51(59%) recorded the challenges faced when accessing Internet information resources an University of uyo libraries.
5.4 Recommendations
Based on the major findings and conclusion of this study, the following recommendations are strongly made:
- The library should make available other types of Internet information resources like internet websites, email services, flash drives, multimedia fax, and other type of Internet information resources to help students in there study and research.
- It is recommended that University of uyo libraries should improvethe use of personal computer, their smart phones and handheld devices to help students access their e-resources in the library.
- It is recommended that awareness of other Internet information resources like fax, multimedia, internet websites, e-journals, e-books should be done by the library to help students in there research and studies.
- Finally, it is recommended that, sufficient networked computers are available for students, adequate I.T skills; computer literacy should be provided in the library to the students in University of uyo.
5.5 Suggestions for Further Studies
- Impact of Mobile Device Integration on Internet Resource Usage in Academic Libraries: Future research could explore the growing role of mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, in accessing internet resources in academic libraries.
- Comparative Study on Internet Resource Utilization in Urban and Rural University Libraries: Further studies could compare the availability and utilization of internet resources in urban versus rural university libraries in Nigeria. This research could identify disparities in internet access, resource availability, and user proficiency, providing actionable recommendations for bridging the digital divide in academic institutions located in different geographic areas.
