Abstract

This study was carried out to assess the factors influencing the choice of chemistry education as a course of study among secondary school students in Ikwuano L.G.A of Abia State. The study was specifically set to determine the extent perceived  value of the Chemistry education influences students’ choice of  the subject in Ikwuano L.G.A of Abia State, determine the extent perceived difficulty of Chemistry subject influences students’ choice of Chemistry education as a course of study in Ikwuano L.G.A of Abia State, determine the extent subject teacher effectiveness influences students’ choice of Chemistry education as a course of study in Ikwuano L.G.A of Abia State, determine the extent gender differences influences students’ choice of Chemistry education as a course of study in Ikwuano L.G.A of Abia State, and determine the extent parents and peer group  influences students’ choice of Chemistry education as a course of study in Ikwuano L.G.A of Abia State. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of Chemistry students of some secondary school in Ikwuano L.G.A of Abia State. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 200 respondents and 150 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables. The result of the findings reveals that the extent perceived value of the Chemistry education influences students’ choice of  the subject in Ikwuano L.G.A of Abia State is high. Furthermore the study also revealed that the extent parents and peer group influences students’ choice of Chemistry education as a course of study in Ikwuano L.G.A of Abia State is high. Therefore the study recommends that In order to encourage more students to choose chemistry as a school subject, Students should be informed and exposed to various career opportunities in Chemistry and be made aware of the basic requirements of such careers. This can be done during Chemistry  and also during school guidance periods. Once students are aware of career opportunities in chemistry at an early age, they will be more motivated and more willing to choose chemistry as a school subject in order to fulfill their career aspirations. To mention but a few.
