Overview

ABSTRACT

At recent years, using hybrid energy storage systems has become a global solution to supply continuous, reliable and clean energy to power electronic devices. By using these technologies, many advantages of energy storage systems can be combined properly and an adequate energy supply for specific applications is achievable. In today’s world, there is a continuous global need for more energy which, at the same time, has to be cleaner than the energy produced from the traditional generation technologies. This need has facilitated the increasing penetration of distributed generation technologies and primarily of renewable energy sources. This paper proposes a WPGS method applied to pure electric vehicles. Establish a mathematical model of Wind-solar photovoltaic hybrid generating system (WPGS) in the Simulink environment, make simulation analysis on the vehicle based on vehicle simulation software ADVISOR, this paper has proved the practicality of WPGS in terms of increasing car trip range.

1.0                                                      INTRODUCTION

1.1                                        BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Continuous and reliable electric power supply is important for power systems. Sometimes, unwilling outages or using an energy source with low reliability can be harmful for electrical systems. Due to incremental fuel cost, shortage of reliability in power sources, increasing demand, and inappropriate effects of fossil fuels on environment, demands for using renewable energy sources have been increasing [Kusakana et al, 2014]. Power generated by wind turbines and photovoltaic cells is a function of different parameters such as radiation intensity, temperature and wind speed [Kuo et al, 2015]. Compounding renewable energy sources such as wind power with fossil fuels can improve this variety nature to gain controllability of power supply [Paiva et al, 2013].

Hybrid power supply is a system in which different types of energy generation have been connected to energy storage systems supplying the load at any time [Belmili et al, 2014]. In a hybrid power supply system, output power is constant while its input power is generated by different sources. In recent years, using Hybrid Electric Energy Storage (HEES) systems have become more important.

The wind and solar energy is freely available and environment friendly. The combination of energy sources provides more reliable power than any one source alone. These hybrid vehicles will become independent of oil. Based on the research and other findings, the hybrid vehicle will become popular and people will be interested on this. So this research is more important when considering the current investments by both Government and the Auto industry. This hybrid vehicles technology will play an important role in future as they are the vehicles of tomorrow. Marketing and sales will not require more investment since they are eco- friendly and better than existing models.

Solar or wind power as a kind of clean energy, after recent years of booming development, its performance and reliability were greatly increased. The electric cars, gained vast popularity in recent years, have some quite mature power demand theories. This study is based on a simulation analysis of the vehicle’s energy control system – using solar and wind energy sources.

1.2                                          PROBLEM STATEMENT

Car is as an essential component for modern society, but is facing the transformation due to its serious environmental pollution. Traditional car was driven by fossil fuel, the emissions include large amount of harmful gases, such as CO, SO. These emissions have made research of green cars has become very popular. Because of its clean and pollution-free characteristics, the electric vehicle has been achieved widely attention in recent years. However, EV has its certain drawbacks, for example, short continuous range and long charging time. This would require the use of other renewable energy to make up for the electric car’s deficiencies.

The Solar and wind power [Yeong, 2011]comes as the gifts of nature, they are clean and powerful. These two kinds of energy could be used to generate electricity and stored in the battery because they are easier to obtain, they cost less and they have zero carbon emissions.

But no matter the solar or wind power, are bound by the natural environment. Currently the wind and photovoltaic hybrid power are used to complement the shortage of the both [Mao et al, 2013]. Using the solar energy to generate power during the day when the light is stronger, using the wind power when it is dominant advantage in the evening. Such complementarities, effective use of the green resources, but also increase the charge in a storage battery, in order to make up for the inadequacy of pure electric vehicles.

1.3                                   AIM AND OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

The major aim of the research is to ensure that maximum power is transferred to an electric vehicle from the PV and Wind Generating system. The objectives of the study are:

  1. To give the current trends of the design, operation and control requirement of wind-solar hybrid energy
  2. To study the applications of wind-solar hybrid in automobile industries
  • To make up for the inadequacy of pure electric
  1. To model and carry out a simulation on the study using MATLAB

1.4                                              PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT

The purpose of the work is to provide sustainable and reliable renewable energies for electric vehicles.

1.5                                          SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE PROJECT

This work also discusses different types of energy storage devices and studies the advantages and disadvantages of these devices. Then wind and solar energy as types of renewable energy sources and their role in hybrid energy systems   will be analyzed and noted. Wind and solar energy storage systems are modelled and simulated. The optimized system is simulated and the results show that sustainable energy is achieved.

1.6                                         SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT

This work presents a comprehensive study of optimal power flows methods with renewable energy constraints. Additionally, this work presents a progress of optimal power flow solution from its beginning to its present form. This study will help the engineers and researchers to optimize power flow with renewable energy sources (solar and wind). This study will help the reader to understand many advantages in using renewable energy sources alongside with the energy generated by fossil fuels.

1.7                                                         PROJECT ORGANISATION

The work is organized as follows: chapter one discuses the introductory part of the work,   chapter two presents the literature review of the study,  chapter three describes the methods applied, chapter four discusses the results of the work, chapter five summarizes the research outcomes and the recommendations.
