The Problems Of Drug Abuse On Student Academic Performance In Secondary Schools (PDF/DOC)
This study examined the impact of drug abuse on the academic performance of secondary school students. Its aim was to investigate how drug abuse affects students’ academic achievements. A descriptive survey design was employed, with three research questions formulated for the study. The total population consisted of 1000 students, from which a random sample of 200 was selected from Government secondary schools in Enugu North local Government Area of Enugu state. Data collection utilized a four-point scale questionnaire, validated adequately and tested for reliability through test-retest methods.
Data analysis was conducted using mean scores. The findings revealed that drug abuse negatively influences secondary school students by causing depression, reducing focus in class, diminishing cognitive abilities, and increasing forgetfulness. Reasons identified for students engaging in drug abuse included academic difficulties, peer pressure, parental influence, social group conformity, and desires for empowerment.
Based on these findings, the researcher recommended several measures to combat drug abuse among students, including early awareness programs in schools, preventive initiatives tailored for high school students, and counseling services. The study further suggested that the government should prohibit the sale and cultivation of substances like Indian Herbs that promote drug abuse, enforce existing laws through regulatory bodies, and establish counseling centers and family education programs to address the issue effectively.
