Abstract

This study examined the impact of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on the learning of Basic Science in primary schools in Urue Offong/Oruko Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Recognizing the growing importance of ICT in modern education, the study explored its effectiveness in enhancing pupils’ understanding of scientific concepts compared to traditional teaching methods. A quasi-experimental and survey research design was adopted, with a sample of 80 pupils and 20 teachers selected through stratified random sampling from four primary schools. Data were collected using the Basic Science Achievement Test (BSAT) and a structured questionnaire, and analyzed using mean, percentages, standard deviation, ANOVA, and t-test at a 0.05 level of significance.

The findings revealed that pupils taught using ICT-based instructional methods performed significantly better than those taught using conventional approaches. ICT tools were also found to improve pupils’ retention and understanding of abstract scientific concepts through interactive and multimedia resources. Additionally, a significant difference was observed between pupils’ and teachers’ perceptions regarding the use of educational technology.

The study concluded that the integration of ICT into Basic Science instruction enhances meaningful learning and academic achievement among primary school pupils. It recommended the adoption of multimedia instructional packages in primary schools, along with improved teacher training and increased investment in technological infrastructure to maximize the benefits of ICT in education.
