Overview

ABSTRACT

The project is titled “The design and construction of a non-contact thermometer using infrared and with alarm”. This device was designed In order to realize the human body temperature fast and non-contact measurement, using an infrared. The infrared human body temperature sensor is mainly used to convert the human body’s infrared into voltage signal, an operational amplifier to amplify the signal, filter circuit to filter the signal, the analog signal into digital signal by the A/D conversion circuit, data processing by the MCU, LCD display and voice reporting body temperature and time, so the human body non-contact measurement is realized. The experimental results show that: the device can realize the temperature and time of acquisition, the measurement error is not more than 0.5℃, voice broadcast and liquid crystal display the temperature and time, overrun alarm and other function.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                          INTRODUCTION

1.1                                           BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

A thermometer is a device that measures temperature or a temperature gradient. A thermometer has two important elements: (1) a temperature sensor in which some physical change occurs with temperature, and (2) some means of converting this physical change into a numerical value (e.g. the visible scale that is marked on a mercury-in-glass thermometer). Thermometers are widely used in industry to control and regulate processes, in the study of weather, in medicine, and in scientific research.

In daily life, the measurement of body temperature is a basic way to determine the normal life of the human body. Although the price of traditional mercury thermometers is cheap , the existing problems are as follows when it is used: Mercury thermometer must contact with the human body , and temperature measurement process need lasted 5 to 10 minutes, because infants is active, let parents become very headache for infant body temperature; And in the number of temperature meter reading, easy to read wrong due to external light and other factors; Mercury thermometer is easy to rupture when heated or stored improperly, It can lead to mercury poisoning due to human body exposure to mercury [1]. Infrared temperature sensor is used for measuring temperature, The measurement trouble of the traditional contact thermometer is avoided. It is especially suitable for infants and young children to measure the body temperature ,and the measured temperature is displayed by the liquid crystal display module, it is accurate, and it has the function of voice broadcast, it is convenient for the people with poor eyesight. The main aim of this work is to build an infrared thermometer which is a thermometer which infers temperature from a portion of the thermal radiation sometimes called black-body radiation emitted by the object being measured. This permits temperature measurement from a distance without contact with the object or to be measured.

1.2                                                  PROBLEM STATEMENT

Traditionally, thermometer was made to be used and read by making contact with the patient or an object which is to be tested and this wastes lot of time and it is inefficient. In order to realize the human body temperature fast and non-contact measurement, an infrared thermometer is designed.

1.3                                       AIM / OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

The main aim of this work is to build an infrared based thermometer which is a device used to measure the temperature of any particular device or living body and displays the reading. A thermometer scale can be in Fahrenheit or Celsius.

1.4                                              PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT

The main purpose of this work is to carry out a temperature measurement without making contact with the object to be measured.

1.5                          SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT

Non-contact: No contact guarantees the best hygiene, thereby greatly reducing the risk of being tested and the operator being infected by bacterial viruses.

Efficient and accurate: Simple operation non-contact sensitive, no need to wait accurate measurement.

infrared sensor: Self-develop infrared module accurate to 0.2 celsius stable, fast and accurate strong adaptability 5.5cm infrared filter wide measurement range.

Smart power saving: Supports automatic shutdown Two AAA batteries can be used more than 3000 times.

1.6                          APPLICATIONS OF THE PROJECT

Medical Applications: The non-contact thermometers are used to measure human body temperature around 37⁰C. These thermometers are mostly probe type or ear type. It measures oral, rectal and arm pit body temperature.

Marine Applications: non-contact thermometers with high temperature exhaust gas sensor as the temperature sensor can be used in marine applications for measuring the local temperature.

Industrial Applications: non-contact thermometers are also used in power plants, nuclear power plants, blast furnaces, ship building industries etc. They can measure temperature from -220⁰C to +850⁰C.

1.7                                  SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

This device provides temperature measurement in one second with non-radiation accurate copper core probe, it has backlight display. Accurate detection of health status, when the measurement results are in the orange high temperature or red high temperature, the backlight will be different, easy to watch. Intelligent calibration and matching of ambient temperature. Automatic recording of 32 groups of memory, convenient to observe the cycle and control the temperature changes whenever necessary.

1.8                                           LIMITATION OF THE PROJECT

Infrared Electronic thermometers are ideal use for taking temperature measurements at a proper distance. Infrared Electronic thermometers provide you to measuring accurate temperatures without ever having to touch the object.

This device has LCD digital display, Lightweight and portable for use. Built-in laser pointer, precise non-contact infrared measurement. 2 temperature units for conversion: Fahrenheit or Celsius, long press “MODE” more than 3s. Measurement modes selection for various needs conveniently. Body temperature measurement: aiming towards the forehead with the distance of 1-5cm. Object temperature measurement: measuring the surface temperature of an object, baby bath water temperature or milk temperature, etc. Automatic selection range and display resolution 0.1°C/0.1°F. Automatic data hold function and auto power off function. Selection for buzzer; set alarm value(the alarm default value is 38°C/100.4°F).

1.9                                        PROJECT WORK ORGANISATION

The work is organized as follows: chapter one discuses the introductory part of the work, chapter two presents the literature review of the study, chapter three describes the methods applied, chapter four discusses the results of the work, chapter five summarizes the research outcomes and the recommendations.
